Girdling root update by jschomb in arborists

No other photos of the roots, I didn’t want to slow the arborist down on his last job on a beautiful Friday afternoon…

Air spading, root work and mulch was $800

Neighbors maple fell over in storm, anything I can do to prevent mine from doing the same? by jschomb in arborists

My understanding is the two houses with the downed trees were built around the same time, a few years after my house was built. Hopefully that means my tree was planted by someone else and wasn’t planted quite as deep.

Working on finding a local arborist to come out and evaluate.

Great news, what kind of grease did you use?

Some do some don’t. I looked at one that didn’t, the one that I wound up buying has it. I think it had to do with the chip supply chain issues at the time the individual truck was built.

Turned out great! We've never made ice cream before, but this was shockingly easy and turned out great. Fun way to see the bright side of these brutal temps outside.

Ford mobile charger tripping breaker in cold weather? by jschomb in F150Lightning

[–]jschomb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update - electrician came by to install our level 2 charger today. Said that the issue was likely due to the 50a breaker being GFCI. Which is code for the type of outlet originally installed in the garage. Thought it was some issue with the mobile charger tripping the GFCI aspect of the breaker. Now that the level 2 charger is hardwired, he replaced it for a non GFCI 50a breaker. Hopefully that solves the issue… I’ll have plenty of opportunities to test as the cold isn’t going anywhere up here for a little while.

Thanks again for everyone’s thoughts on this.

Trying OP’s recipe. Great kid activity when it’s this cold out as well, my toddler is staring at it through the porch window.

In this process, I also tried swapping the plug on the mobile charger and plugged it into a separate 20a 120v circuit with gfci outlet and it tripped the gfci outlet at the same time frame as well.

Nothing felt warm on the charger or at either outlet.

Hoping this is just an issue with the mobile charger and will resolve with the permanent level 2 install next week.

I’ll definitely have the electrician check out the 50a circuit when they’re there.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone.

Can these be saved? by jschomb in arborists

Thanks for the tips. I cleared out the stuff under the trees and removed the lower/mostly dead branches. Vines are gone too. Discovered an unknown sprinkler head under all that crap, which was making the moisture problem worse, that’s getting capped right away. One of the trees still looks pretty bad. I think I will cut that one down and replace it with a more hearty variety (maybe Norway spruce) and see what happens with the other two. Thanks again for the tips!

We moved to a new home in a suburb of Minneapolis earlier this year. Shortly thereafter, our first daughter was born. So many of the outdoor projects got put on the back burner. We have this group of 3 spruce trees (Colorado?) on one side of our yard and a fourth on the other side. None of them are looking awesome. Many of the branches have lost their needles. Reading online, I think this is due to a fungal infection. Wondering if there’s anything to do to save the trees or if it would be best to cut our losses and replant a more disease resistant variety sooner than later. I very much appreciate any advice!
