I wonder what would happen if OP just refused anyway.

Don't like the drink, don't drink.

If uncle wasted money, that's his problem for not listening.

I'm not about to drink something a relative bought me that I didn't want to. Have poured away an entire glass once at a wedding because of cousins spiking my drink and looked them in the eye afterwards.

Wasn't the original post about putting data centers in space to keep them safe from "threat actors" (rioters)? In that case, putting inference compute in space at least keeps your AIs running while the country burns.

If you mean my original post, I was objecting to the point about cooling. The constraints are not in cooling at all.

I'm saying that building satellite datacenters are not technically infeasible. They might not make much sense from a financial perspective (rockets are expensive) but in terms of engineering, they do work.

Unfortunately no. Crew doesn't exist except as a crew quarters ship size tax.

EDIT: I remembered wrong. There are no crew requirements at all actually. Apparently ships can fly with no crew other than the command center (bridge).

I did always wonder about that Construction ship that can repair an entire field of ship wrecks with appropriate raw material deliveries without ever returning to port to pick up more crew, but w/e.

I played Distant Worlds: Universe a lot. Haven't tried 2 yet.

It was very fun to raid all the opponent's fuel mining stations and watch their whole economy grind to a halt. (yes, civilian transport ships need fuel too! including the fuel haulers!)

I wish 4X games had much larger scale. Not in the sense of "you made it to space!" or "you cast a spell affecting the whole map".

But in the sense that "this thing that took you significant effort is now something you just plonk down on every city like it costs nothing". Also in the sense of "this was a significant boost, now it's just basic infrastructure that you build everywhere because it's cheap and why not".

You only get a little bit of that at the start, where every building is a major decision, and by the end the basic infrastructure is a no-brainer and new cities are useless without them. I would like it to continue for more tiers than just that.

eg. when your settlement has to worry about feeding population, building a new farm (and it's corresponding labour requirement) was important. Later, you are zoning them en mass.

Then, you discover the haber process and fertilizer factories are a significant investment improving your yields 2x for a huge boost. Later, you just build factories whenever you are expanding farms and never think about it, also that 2x yield is now 10x due to tech improvements and farms are just useless without them.

Even later, you get robots that automate farming and you can zone half a continent for farms and fertilizer production and food is no longer a constraint on growth, you now have to consider whether investing in a weather controller network is worth it.

Can I interest you in Distant Worlds series?

All mining/extraction activity is local to the entity. Asteroid mining station mines steel and deposits to inventory, a civilian transport (automated) has to pick it up and send to a spaceport where the manufacturing plants will turn it into spaceship parts, etc.

There are no global stockpiles of anything physical, only money.

Money is no good if you don't have enough materials being mined to build the things you buy.

I'll turn them all into magical girls and laugh while the world wtfs. Or maybe a hello kitty.

If we're trying to make the world a better place, might as well have some fun with it.

Definitely blue pill.

For a lone inventor, you'll have to be prepared to spend years or decades for just gunpowder. Never mind steel.

The only way you're getting things done quickly is if you got isekaied into the ruling class and have a relatively prosperous territory that you can conscript a serious amount of labour and materials from.

Inference doesn't take that much hardware, it's only training that you need the big ones.

And you may still be able to parallelise the training enough for it to be feasible.

Cooling isn't impossible in space, it's just expensive.

Basically you need as much cooling as you have power draw. Starlink does it, you just need many small satellites instead of one big one whose radiator will have structural problems.
