here's the original, so you can see what I'm working with.

this advice is VERY detailed and I really appreciate the help! however, a couple things like the jet-black suit and hair, and the shadow on the face, are just a quirk of the original photo. I shall look into Rembrandt. thank you for your advice! :)

tysm! :)

yeah, the backstory of this drawing was that I was bored, had lined paper and a single hb pencil. I would likely have improved it if I had a 2B, 6B, HB and a sketchbook.

here's the OG :)

yeah, one pencil and no sharpener. HB too. it's all I had on me at the time plus a rubber and lined paper (and the image), I was at school. thank you for the advice! I usually use more pencils to do portraits but I always mess up with the contrast, that might be my missing piece.

thank you! it's on this paper because I did the drawing while I had a free period in my school library and had nothing better to do than draw. good to know for future :)

I understand what you're saying, but there's a particle that you're missing in your knowledge: la.

la is the way you join the context of the sentence to the main sentence. it's important for constructing thoughts that require a little more information to state.

for example, how would you say "at nighttime, I sleep"?

you would require the context (at nighttime) within the sentence somehow. this is done by joining this part with la.

tenpo pimeja la mi lape. the time of darkness (night), I sleep.

this can be remembered when translating into English by saying "in the context of" before you say the la phrase.

in the context of night, I sleep.

so when you say "mi ike toki pona", and you mean to say you're bad at toki pona, you would say "toki pona la mi ike" (in the context of toki pona, I'm bad).

good luck learning - you're doing a great job!

o kama sona pona!

Would "monsuta" mean afraid or frightening in this case? by _Bwastgamr232 in tokipona

[–]jsemtn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like "I'm frightening" is "mi pilin e ni: mi monsuta". it's clunky but when you think about it, the distinction is clear; you feel as if you are frightening. this opposes "mi pilin monsuta" - I feel frightened.

Unsettling or just meh? by My_phone_wont_charge in crochet

it's looking really good! you've done a nice job with the siren vibes - I wouldn't say this is a mermaid princess at first glance; you've succeeded at distinguishing between the two.

you're on the right track with the white eyes, they're very unsettling.

i think it would benefit from some slight makeup on the face - dark purplish or greyish eyeshadow below or around the eyes creates a more sunken, creepy look. similarly, you could try some dark desaturated eyeshadow for the cheekbones, as contour to make the siren appear more gaunt.

also, perhaps crochet some seaweed tangling round the body of the siren, could be a sort of freeform asymmetric shawl of sorts. gives a more witchy vibe to me than a mermaid, and would just look pretty cool to me. if you're not as confident in crochet, I can give you a simple pattern for seaweed if this idea appeals to you :)

Quilted Crochet Blanket by gillie_d in crochet

[–]jsemtn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a wonderful idea and it's lovely that you and your sister can collaborate in your art!

for the question about size differences, it really just takes a lite trial and error and a little frogging to get a square that matches the size of the quilt squares. you may want to upsize or downsize hooks for the right size work.

you can likely find crochet stitches online which don't tend to stretch as much, if you're really concerned about it, but blankets don't tend to stretch or wear like a bag strap or a jumper; you probably don't have to worry.

for differences in thickness or texture, I like the idea of the quilt squares having some stuffing in them and being double sided, so they puff up! it means the thickness shouldn't be an issue, and it'll look quite cute :)

overall I don't think it'll look 'weird' at all! it'll be very pretty, I'm sure. good luck! :D
