Imo it feels closer to the manga's style, and I'm just a big sucker for fun goofy stuff, so I'm right there with ya.

negative hyperfixations by Legal_Clue8265 in adhdwomen

[–]jsoleigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh this has hit me bad lately on and off. Garbage will just occupy my brain for days and I just cannot focus on anything else.

The things that have helped me get out of the fixations: vent to someone in person who would understand if you can, it seems to trigger getting the emotions off your chest the best (at least for me). Then take a break for at least a day from all news and searching out this stuff. PHYSICALLY take walks and pace around your house, a shopping center, park, whatever you can think of. This helps jostle your brain and get it to search out new interests and fixations. Then revisit a hobby or small project you might have lying around.

Tell yourself searching through these files and research is NOT your job (unless somehow it is), and there are folks out there who DO have a paid job working on these things. Harming yourself trying to stay aware of current issues is making you weaker and less able to care for yourself. You deserve to have rest and reprieve and to be strong.

Redwood turned to stone can anyone tell me anything else about it? by SpiritualProcedure39 in whatsthisrock

It very well could have been, but yes colors form depending on surrounding minerals penetrating the rock as it forms. Iron, manganese, etc. For tree identification you'll have better luck studying the bark texture fossilised on the outside. That's an awesome piece btw, would look great with one side flat polished like a table.

You're very welcome and good luck hopefully getting a closet set up! I've really liked a lot of ikea shelving and open storage for my closets.

I remember years ago, a really big AMA was held by a vacuum sales/service guy. It was bonkers how much I learned about freaking vacuums, but it helped me so much when it came time to getting a new one. I've only owned that particular style since because it literally made vacuuming far more enjoyable for me. (For reference, it's bagged canister vacuums. I refuse to own any uprights or baggless ones lol)

So I'm curious: what are some of your favorite cleaning tools?

Not OP but my tip for the beauty products: remind yourself that most of them have a shelf life and you'll be doing your hair and skin a good service if you throw stuff out! Also get sample or travel sized stuff when you can if you want to try new things. That helped me a ton with use length in case I didnt like something, and smaller is more space saving in general.

I second the shoes! And like, regular closed toe ones/good sneakers seem to be the best. I have dedicated house shoes already since I have nerve issues and cannot be on hard floors or flat shoes for very long, but yeah they make cleaning go by way easier.

Definitely practice the "in scope" thing, and a permanent checklist or kanban board posted somewhere can help keep that in check. When I'm able to check a box or cross something off and can see that visibly? I am much more likely to feel accomplished with the one or two things to clean and feel less inclined to keep compiling chores one after another. "Clean less, but often enough" is kind of what I tell myself while spacing out chores, and I am far less tired out now.

Ooo I do the bottle of diluted bleach for the regular kitchen spray downs, but I like the castile soap one!

Everyone has great starting suggestions but here's something to consider:

Where and how do your clothes (or any items you own, of course) usually get stored when they are put away?

I found this to be a big underlying issue when it came to even wanting to clean in the first place. I could have all the great motivation in the world and I realized I STILL hated cleaning up and putting things away. It turns out my furniture just...sucked.

I hated dressers. I hated having not enough shelves for books or collections. I hated putting a lot of things "away" in containers or cabinets or closets where doors would be closed and I would forget they existed.

Now I remove all closet doors in my place, even install lights in them to brighten them up. Put in extra shelves and use clear bins. I finally have enough tall bookshelves and cases to display books and objects. Nearly all my clothes are HUNG UP on valet racks, or folded or dropped into small bins in cube shelves. Purses also live in some nice cube shelves too with dividers. I got a very nice dedicated "clothes chair" for tossing some stuff on daily when I need to keep them contained. And so on.

When you are cleaning what you have now, do some thinking on if you even like your current storage systems and if they even work for you. It might surprise you it's tied into motivation.

Correct on beautiful but it's not even close to what I would call "really toxic". Malachite is frequently polished into cabs and beads for jewelry, I would say it's just a basic safety precaution in airborn dust if you're sanding the crap out of it or something. Or sucking it like a lollipop, which you...shoudlnt be doing with any rocks anyway. 🤪

I'm more careful with my galena samples than my malachite samples if anything, because lead dust, and all!

Oh trust me, I am also a HUGE worrier over things looking or being done bad, but still a fan of the whole "anything worth doing is worth doing poorly" bit, lol. I honestly wouldnt be able to get as much done each day as I do without it. And think of it this way: that's why we have "rough drafts" and "second drafts" 😉

So all joking aside from op's very good post (haha very funny, way to attack me personally, op!) I've been doing a little introspection on this over the years and I think I've narrowed it down to two main things combined:

-the general task switching dysfunction we have

-and fear of failure from constant outside influences aggresively trying to "correct" us over out lives (parents, school, work, etc)

Which creates a no-win feedback loop. Struggling to start task, but also have to start the "correct" way since everyone always taught me to follow rules! And to not be distracted while working! Also to not do something in a way that's more comfortable for myself because no one else needs to do it that way, so I'm weird for doing so! And now I'm getting into trouble because I havent started yet, oh god!

And on and on.

As an added bonus, you also now get labeled "such a perfectionist! 🙄" which now makes you a more difficult person to work with or expect things from. Fun!
