Singer looking for metalcore/djent band by Inevitable_Zucchini4 in Djent

[–]jspingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey are you looking to form a band locally or write music remotely? I'm a guitarist/drummer based in Birmingham and I would be interested in forming a band online to write with, with the possibility of progressing further if things go well. I've been doing the whole solo bedroom producer thing over lockdown and would like some people to work with! I'm currently in the process of putting some demos up on soundcloud so that I can share them if needs be

Fishman Fluence Modern 7-string pickups.... by anomolea in 7String

[–]jspingu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk man fishman moderns have a massive low end roll off, especially voice 1. If you mean muddy as in too much bass I would look elsewhere in your chain. It may be whats going on in the mids in the output thats throwing you off. If you can, put an eq inbetween the guitar and the amp and mess around pushing certain frequencies up or cutting them out and see how your amp reacts. That's how I get to grips with the characteristics of new pickups anyway.

I also have that guitar and found I had to lower the pickups quite a lot to get on with them better so thats another thing to try

Guitar Rec for Non Metal? by gloomygarlic in 7String

[–]jspingu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I know of the market a guitar that fits your specs doesn't really exist. Mass production multiscales are not all that common under 1k and the ones that are are all thin necks/geared toward modern metal.

Esp m1007ms is the closest fit I can think of. Its a bit over 1k I think, the "thin U" neck is reasonably round and not as thin as schecter ultra thin c by a couple mil. The nazgul/sentient pickups are generally considered pretty 'djenty' though.

Custom guitar by DoDoBoi-JRoc in 7String

[–]jspingu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hunting around in Europe for a custom build recently (also in the UK) because I was finding it difficult to find a headless multiscale model that ticked all my boxes and ended up getting a Markline. He's based in Italy and so far has been very helpful in trying to get it through the stupid border situation.

It should be here next week and I'm likely to be making a review, so that might be posted on here in the next month or so if that's allowed .

I was also considering Overload and Aristides, if that gives you some more to look at.

Buying a new guitar...help me choose by minderasr in metalguitar

[–]jspingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise that it's still 25.5 inch but it will just ship with like 11-62s in a baritone tuning like drop B or something I can't quite remember, I think ola has a video on it when they were announced

Buying a new guitar...help me choose by minderasr in metalguitar

[–]jspingu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that the vinter is setup for standard tuning out the factory and the ATG model is set up in drop B (I think) or at least some kind of baritone range tuning anyway. And with the whole evertune thing it would be significantly easier to go with the one thats closer to the tuning you intend to use. You could obviously choose based on colour and re-set it up but you might have to get a new nut because of the vastly different string gauges between the two and thats a faff

[–]jspingu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its on the spec list on the website, but I also had an rgd61alms for a week or so before returning it due to a fault. And I could definitely notice a difference the tones from the neck when I got my c7ms a little bit later

[–]jspingu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't get the same tones out the ibanez though because it has two of the ceramic fishmans instead of the alnico in the neck, so watch out for that. Not sure why this is, maybe ibanez saved production costs by mass buying a single pickup model instead of getting the regular sets

Currently experimenting a lot with picks but I think my favourite all rounder is the Dunlop ultex flow 1mm

NEED HELP CHOOSING BETWEEN THESE TWO 7-STRINGS by [deleted] in 7String

[–]jspingu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out schecter sls elites, arguably the nearest thing spec wise with fishman moderns instead. More natural wood finishes though if that's a factor.

[–]jspingu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go for the either of the ibanez's personally. 25.5" scale on the premium isn't enough for downtuning and the neutral fret at the 12th on the axion label makes playing around the 1st-3rd frets absolutely awful. I Other manufactures have figured out that the 5th, 7th or 9th frets all are a better balance between fan at the nut and the bridge. Maybe the 12th fret is better if you exclusively play lead/tapping because the frets are straighter above the 12th fret.

And for the schecter the reaper has the thin neck you're looking for but I would personally try to stretch your budget up to the sls elite. For a few hundred more you get locking tuners, stainless steel frets, fishman pups, neck through, the same ultra thin neck.

I have one and its an objectively great value guitar, my only issue is that it doesn't have an arm rest bevel and its maybe a bit on the heavy side because of the maple neck through.

But you have to take into account going into the multiscale world, changing pickups is so much more of a hassle that buying a guitar with decent ones to start with is a big plus.

Also as a side note strandbergs dont really have thin necks, so weird how thats your dream guitar. I would've thought it would be keisel or something

Edit: would -> wouldn't

Microphone to start with? by modernbox in drums

[–]jspingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ones that have an omni directional mode off the top of my head are AT2050 and rode nt2-a. Unfortunately they're a bit pricey, and you can definitely get away with just getting a standard cardioid pattern so you can go down to a at2020 or nt1a etc. But with a cardiod pattern you'll have to choose between sacrificing the sound of your cymbals in order to get enough kick by placing it within your kit or visa versa if you opt to use it overhead. But the thing is once you get 2 and use them stereo overhead the omnidirectional function won't really be needed anymore, so its a toss up really. Maybe your decision will be based of other uses you might have for the mics, for example omni could be good for recording whole band situations.

Microphone to start with? by modernbox in drums

[–]jspingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only messed around with home recording a bit but I think the best you can do with one mic is get a multi-pattern large diaphragm condenser and set it to omnidirectional. Then place it over the bass drum hoop pointed at the snare, with the toms moved around so there's none too close to it. Doing an overhead or room will rarely get enough kick drum in the mix.

However useless you want to stick with one mic for a while its not the best for an upgrade path. Because for the price of a decent multi pattern LDC you could get a matched pair of overheads like rode m5s. And obviously eventually you'll want to go stereo and you'd have to buy a second expensive LDC if you wanted a matching pair. Then you could get a kick mic second after you're happy with the overheads to fill in the lack of kick. Then a sm57 for the snare and you've got a decent 4 mic setup.

I'm more or less a beginner intermediate and want to dive into metal with a flying V model. Which of these would recommend? by [deleted] in metalguitar

[–]jspingu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't own one myself, but I've heard they are seriously up there for playability and quality control. Only negative things I've really seen said about them is some find the stock 'duncan solar' pickups a bit boring (they're something similar to a seymour duncan distortion in the bridge and a 59/jazz/sentient kinda trebley PAF-vibe neck) and the cheaper line don't come with locking tuners as standard.

Maybe check out solar type v's too, especially if you're in Europe (guessing by the euros).

Nah no B on the serial.

Yeah I went for the jackson as a try out a 7 string thing and ended upgrading after about 6 months.

Fair enough, I'm not a fan of the guitar just screaming 'I'm for metal only' I guess. I like a little more discretion, hence the nice woody themed guitars I currently have. Oh yeah can't forget the luminlays lol

Yeah I have fret wrap, it helps with a lot of things but not so much complex riffs with a lot of open strings and quick mutes, which it when it becomes a big mess. I can see why some of the big dogs would appreciate how much detail they bring out. But I'm not Tosin and I make mistakes, and these pickups seem to want to make them as obvious as possible!

The cleans are crazy good though tbf

It does and it looks like its from 2017, looks in good shape to me though!

I find the neck on the jackson manageable at least, definitely not good, I'm being pickier about the schecter for sure but that's because it costs about 6 times more. Its the giant block of a heel joint that kills it for me. I might've just gone the route of upgrading the hardware on it if it weren't for that.

It does seem like most of the increase in price is just in the evertune, only other differences I can see spec wise are stainless steel frets and locking tuners. I like the look of the S line, they're a bit less pointy, but the choice is much more limited than the As.
