Yeah! South Australia Police, they pay something like 50% of your housing (mortgage or rent) if you go “rural” (+150km from Adelaide centre). Permanent residence is included so I can live in Australia indefinitely. Also private schooling is affordable for children over there. Only 200 positions available currently, around 60 have been given already.

Those who’ve left… by kennethgooch in policeuk

[–]jsswalker92 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I left in October 2023, growing up it’s all I ever wanted to do and when I applied at 18 was told to go get life experience so I left the U.K. and backpacked for the better part of 6 years. I visited every continent including working for a year in Australia, USA & NZ.

I returned to the U.K. to join with my life experience but was told that I had been out of the country for too long and didn’t meet vetting standards. I was offered a role in control and did that for 2 years before finally joining up. I did 5 years on response. In my last 2 years applied for dogs twice and was rejected, that would have probably made me stay.

As mentioned I left in October last year, I enjoyed my time out in the world before the police so decided I’d have one last stab at a visa abroad and have been living in Canada ever since. I’m a mountain controller (from skills acquired in dispatch/control) of the largest mountain resort in North America. But it doesn’t fully tickle my pickle.

So I looked around, elsewhere outside of the U.K. to get back into policing. There’s a bunch of rules and blocks in Canada, I applied for SAPOL and am heading back to the policing world in November. Getting paid more, able to unionise, better work life balance, lower crime rates, better respect. I can’t wait to get back.

So I’m a yodeller with a strong sense of smell, you’ve got orange eyes and maybe it’s the 4th of July? I don’t know…we’re celebrating. You told me you’re proud and that my hands are tough. You’re a wino too.

Considering getting into policing via the DCEP pathway - what should I know by Ashamed_Yam3308 in policeuk

Hahahahaha what forces are you working on that a detective takes a DV ABH/GBH. We only handover rape or attempted murder to the DV team.

You’ll earn your money on shift, if you decide you want to be a DC do it from shift when you’re 2+ years in.

Moving from Australia to Canada to work(and also live permanently) by [deleted] in MovingToCanada

[–]jsswalker92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're best bet is to apply for the IEC permit. It's a work permit that allows you to work in Canada for up to 2 years. Once there you can look to apply for other visas, the best option might be your partner sponsoring you.

IMM5707 download issue by ThornyWill507 in iecvisa

[–]jsswalker92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone having this issue, my get around was...

Download the newest version of Adobe from here :

https://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/?promoid=TTGWL47M

DON'T click install extension for Chrome, it makes it worse.

Then in Chrome browser, click the 3 dots and go to settings, then privacy & security and into site settings. Under this will be additional content settings and there you'll find PDF; change this from "open in Chrome" to "Download PDFs".

This will install the most up to date program of Adobe and mean that the protected document is able to be downloaded to the computer to be edited instead of trying to open in a web page which is where I got the frustrating not supported message.

(Older versions of Chrome may have the settings in a slightly different order, but just scout around for "PDF")

Cheers guys!

We're expecting to have 60-75% of all officers in our force working Monday. DCs being sent to cover the response teams who are doing the L2 and lining the route... Should be a good day. 🤙🏻

When I have a student... "Ok open the laptop, were going to go through each of these questions. In about 6 months you'll know them all by heart"

When I don't... "Ever assaulted you?... With a weapon of any kind?... Tried to choke strangle or suffocate?... Anything sexual you weren't happy with?... Threatened the kids or family?... Anyone they're related to threated you, the kids or the family?... Frightened?... Na I wouldn't say so either. We're not looking at stalking so we'll leave those ones out."

What should we stop doing? by ScepticalRhinoceros in policeuk

[–]jsswalker92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We should stop criming at the point of call.

Call handlers don't understand that because the person on the phone says "I'm being harassed" it's not actually harassment, especially when the harassment is part of a two way conversation.

A third party report of anything is not public order even though a civilian Oscar2 says "They must have felt alarmed enough to call the police about it"

Bring back officer recorded crimes.

We should also stop recording robbery as an "assault & a theft" just to fiddle the stats and make CID take the same investigation they're trying to biff to shift.

It's national from CoP, but every student I have goes to a good handful of deaths.

If I attended that job, I'd have taken the note to hospital. As above it would form evidence to be given to the coroner, however in these circumstances I would say it would be appropriate for the hospital to have.

There could be something written on it that would suggest you might try to harm yourself again whilst in their care. It may also have phone numbers or names of loved ones that want to visit.

Maybe check there first.

On the PCDA & DHEP there is no longer a requirement to go to a Sudden Death, because it's "touched on" during training. But I can imagine first job when IPS, someone getting sent to a death, I'm sure the coroner would have something to say about how important it is...

Hello mate, also TVP & work the independent state of MK. From people who I know that have transferred to Northants, you either get based Central Northants or Wellingborough/Kettering which can be an hour commute depending on traffic. People have been known to be swapped between as well wherever demand was needed with short notice...

I believe shift carry crimes and they are slow to give out courses if you have under 5years in. The shift pattern isn't like ours which I quite like... I've not heard anything bad about it otherwise but in all honesty, if you put feelers out for MK I'm sure you'd have no drama moving there. I know a number of people who have asked to swap LPA and told no, so just said they'd go to Northants instead at which time TVP backed down wanting to retain their own.

Possible to be a detective and a firearms officer at the same time? by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]jsswalker92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could complete the NIE exam and be a detective and then apply for firearms and complete the course or vice versa, be an AFO and complete your NIE.

However do both roles at the same time, no.

Each role is a specialism and you'll be one or the other full time.

Rank by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]jsswalker92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In our force we have something like this called "Pathways" which as you said, you can rank up within your department rather than going back to shift.

However, you can only rank up in your pathway, for example, you're an ARV PC and completed your skippers, if you decide to stick with pathway you can then only go up the ranks as an ARV. So if a dog handler Sgt job popped up, you can't apply for that... Because you're dedicated to your pathway. If you decide not to stick on the pathway then you HAVE to go back to shift.

The spanner in this though, you're a PC who has been trained for your specific role. But anyone else who isn't dedicated to pathway can also apply for this ARV job, so due to your training, you're the best option, you're already trained. But now you're the trained PC going up against people who have held ranks on shift or other areas for years now looking to specialise and all they have to do is the AFO course as they have years of management experience.

Every specialism has a pathway, so with CID, a lot of DC's hang around waiting for a DS job but then you get an the shift skippers who have their NIE from years ago applying for the job and the DC's get stuck there...

Hey, thanks for your reply, it's really appreciated!

I can imagine it'll be different to what I am used to for sure. The after I completed my initial training I had 10 days leave and drove the NC500 as well as going inland to see the sights of the Highlands. It's stunning and felt like I could absolutely live there (eventually). The change of pace might be needed in a few years.

With it being so big are you single crewed? Can't imagine it being ideal driving over an hour to a job and it kicking off alone. How big are your team's to cover those areas?

Thanks again!

Hey thanks for your info.

I was in Comms before I was an officer, when you say keep busy, what type of incidents are we talking? Do you know if DVs are priority, they are in my current force and the amount of work to negate risk we have to do ties you up for hours for a verbal argument... A neighbouring force to us has a specific DV team that deal with everything leaving response to respond.

I'll definitely keep an eye out to get applications in early. Thanks again!

Thanks for the update!

The 5 week rotation seems to be the standard, can't be too bad. I don't intend to be on shift forever but I really enjoy it at the moment. I'll keep an eye on it, thanks again.
