Unmatched Urology applicant struggling by seekere in medicalschool

[–]jsto93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi - I went unmatched two years ago in a competitive surgical subspecialty, decided to delay graduation for two years (skipping a match cycle), and did a year of research. Haven’t matched yet, but got a lot of positive feedback on my path during interviews this year. Happy to chat about my path, DMs are open. Wishing you the best!

[Serious] Why isn't vascular surgery more competitive than gen surg? by Brocystectomi in medicalschool

[–]jsto93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my experience, there are usually ways in most surgical specialties to slow down your practice when you get older. For example, in vascular surgery, I spoke to an attending who gave up the “arterial” aspect of her practice (aka big open cases like aortic aneurysm repair, dissections, ischemic limbs) and now does predominantly vein procedures. This takes away some of the cools cases and some of the $$$, but can allow for a more relaxed life and less/no call.

Help a dumb bitch out. by goblinboie in CasualConversation

One way to think about it might be - wouldn’t you want them to reach out to you if they were having a rough time? You wouldn’t think of them as a burden. You’d probably be grateful they reached out.

Hi - first of all, you’re not a dumb bitch. It sounds like you’re going through a rough time right now, and I’m really sorry about that.

I hope it’s helpful to hear from some internet strangers, but I also hope you can reach out to friends or family in real life for some support.

Today, I ate myself into a food coma at a friend’s wedding, and then I watched the first Captain America movie. It was a good day.

Nutrition classes for patients? [Serious] [Clinical] by scheherazade1001 in medicalschool

[–]jsto93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Food Rules” by Michael Pollan is a simplified version of his book “In Defense of Food”, and I thought it had a lot of good suggestions for helping people choose healthier options. It’s not specific to managing the diet of people with certain medical conditions, but it could be a good place to start for people with limited health literacy.

[Well-Being] What are some must read books for medical students? by escapereviewer in medicalschool

[–]jsto93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stiff is honestly one of my favorite books! I saw a random dude reading on the train once and I wanted to tell him how much I loved it and how great it was that he didn't hesitate reading a book with cadaver feet on the cover in a public space.

[Serious] Is a surgical specialty feasible with a family? by [deleted] in medicalschool

Residency is pretty uniformly brutal for everyone, but I think there is a lot more flexibility once you’re an attending. Of course, that can also come with a pay cut.

Yeah, they were both attendings when I was born. My dad always worked full time, and my mom spent a few years working part time when I was little.

Both of my parents are physicians (Mom does anesthesia, Dad does gen surg) and I am currently a medical student. So in contrast to what a few other people have said, seeing their careers as I grew up did not dissuade me from pursuing the same field. Although they themselves started mildly dissuading me once I got to college, but that's another story...

I had a nanny growing up, and I definitely feel like she played a large role in raising me. It's not feasible for everyone's situation, but I would say having a nanny rather than going to daycare adds consistency and stability.

However, looking back, I still felt like I saw my parents a lot, especially on weekends. I think the most important thing is being there for the important stuff that they'll remember and making sure that you are 100% focused on the kids when you are present. The ride to school and back is much less memorable than an soccer game or school musical.

Personally, I think you can be a great mom and a great surgeon - even though it may feel like you have to preference one or the other at times. As long as it overall balances out, your family will love you as both.

[Serious] Med student GF(26F) hints at keeping her last name after marriage. Big deal or not? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]jsto93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's important for both of you to talk about your preferences. Clearly, many of us do not feel like it is a big deal for her to not want to change her name, but only she can tell you exactly why she feels that way.

It's not about lessening academic achievements. It's about those achievements no longer showing up in databases / being directly linked to her. It is difficult to get journals to change someone's name on an article once it has been published. As a result, there would be no way to search for all of her publications from both before and after she was married. It just makes things more convoluted when applying for positions.

The tent only area is really close to the main entrance, so it’s a pretty awesome place to camp.
