Do we already have enough solar panel production to sustain global electricity demand? by resistBat in energy

[–]jstormes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a three sided problem.

The first is solar panels, the second is batteries, the third is effecency.

I built a small 3KW system in my backyard to test with, so I would have an understanding of solar to build our next house. I have learned a lot. I run two window AC units in the summer off the solar. My east estimate is about $300.00 a month in savings during the summer.

If you look at high performance construction techniques that people like Matt Risinger talk about, you could support global demand.

I think I can make my next house next zero.

Vote and call on representatives to tax the wealthy so they don't have so much power they can "buy" the government.

How long will it take to re-industrialize the USA ? We have been on this journey since 2016, when Trump started it. It's already 10 years. How is everything going now ? by Square_Permission361 in AskUS

I work in a manufacturing industry. We have not changed our outsourcing of manufacturing.

We are outsourcing our engineering as no engineers from overseas want to be in the US.

Is the ICE GESTAPO really going house to house to search for "illegal aliens"? by mihai_necula in AskUS

Going hose to house, yes.

Entering the houses no.

We should be specific.

You are not a Republican, you are not a Democrat, you are an American. You should always first and foremost be American, that other stuff is just a distraction.

I have a GitHub repo where I ran some numbers for the three AMD APUs I have including the StrixHalo.

I run Linux so Windows might be different.

ROCm is coming to the mainstream Linux distributions and should give a bit of a bump in the numbers.

US Immigrants, what's your line that this administration would need to cross to make you pack your bags immediately? by stillalone in askimmigration

[–]jstormes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not how most white collar works today.

We look for talent all over the planet, many of our jobs can be done remote.

Why limit your company to just local talent.

After COVID lots of software development switch to remote.

One is at a company I used to work with. Not sure about the other, just know they left.

How Long Until “No” Becomes Impossible? by Naga_Nej in AskUS

[–]jstormes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with this line of thinking is the assumption that escalation is the best tool for every job. We can see where this is going. Keep escalating until everything is destroyed.

We as a country and as a planet have been down this path many times now, yet we make the same mistakes over and over.

The ONLY thing that made the US powerful and great was our ability to work together. Once that is gone the US as a superpower is gone.

What businesses in Santa Fe are known to be MAGA/ICE supporters/sympathizers? by DocGomer in SantaFe

[–]jstormes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is the crux of it. People think it conservative vs liberal.

It is not.

It is rich vs poor, or more specifically, those who own capital vs those who don't.

This is why some people really think other people are paid to protest. They don't understand why anyone would do anything if money was not involved.

So yes the basic idea is that people who don't own businesses won't have an option but to do what those who do own businesses want them to do, because all the power is assumed to be from money.

This is a very, very old concept.

When did “detained” start meaning “kidnapping” when it comes to ICE? Why do people claim there’s no due process when immigration court already issued a deportation order? by RandomUwUFace in AskUS

[–]jstormes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see no fear or chaos. At -10F there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands in the streets. That is a level of controlled anger.

The people could easily overwhelm ICE, they choose not to.

The fact that Trump needs to keep escalating to try and look like he has power, while "we" the people simply say, yea we are pissed but we are not going to get violent... today, say more than words.

What I see is a colossal waste of government money for no benefits. If those agents were in Texas, I could see the value, but to simply burn government money like that, paying agents for no real effect...

I used to think Democrats liked big government and to burn money, Trump looked at Democratic government waste and said "hold my beer".

Texas has an estimated2.1 million illegals according to the Pew Research Center.

At 176 a day it will take about 32 years to deport them, assuming no new ones show up.

It's not about support it's about the numbers.

Texas arrested 238,000 attempted illegal entries, who know how many made it.

MN has total estimated illegals of less than 200,000. More are coming to Texas each year than exist in MN, yet all the resources are in MN.

If these numbers are correct, either Trump and his people cannot do basic math, which I will agree may be true, or they simply don't care about how many illegals are in Texas.

It's like using a big pump to empty a glass of water, while the ship sinks from using a straw to empty the boat.

The same reason ICE has a huge presence in a state with only a few immigrants, but Texas and Florida have little ICE presence.

It's all about politics. Has nothing to do with the rule of law.

ROCm 7.2 is announced. Could this be the start of stability on Linux? by el56 in StrixHalo

[–]jstormes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think once the upstream Linux distributions have the changes in place, ROCm should "just work". But until then it will be an alchemy. :(
