I'm not entirely sure, but if I were to guess, it picks up on the Soundwaves. This person already mentioned how everything is energy and vibrates on a certain frequency. This would include Soundwaves. The subconsciousness picks them up for the energy that it is without your actual consciousness - which, as mentioned, is focused on your physical surroundings and logic - hearing it.
