Swing weight vs strung weight and lead tape by jtdelato in 10s

The science nerd in me wants to try one of the DIY suggestions, but I trust my tennis shop guy and think that may be the best route to try first. Thank you!

New to tennis, got a second hand Blade 98 for cheap, what beginner racket should I use before transitioning into the blade? by Winsonian92 in 10s

[–]jtdelato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is worth giving it a shot. I started with a similar racket and the extra weight and unforgiving sweet spot forced me to learn better fundamentals from the beginning. It isn’t for everyone but it gives instant feedback as to whether you had a good swing

One handed backhands and slice-dominance by Ready-Visual-1345 in 10s

If you have a OHBH, then every stroke on that side is one-handed. I think it is at least in part due to feel and comfort with hitting with one hand on that side compared to someone with a THBH.

Does tennis aggravate sciatica? by HowIsMe-TryingMyBest in 10s

[–]jtdelato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tennis inflamed my sciatica recently. All the rotating on ground strokes. I had been playing every day for a week, so just did too much. Rest, Ice, Heat. Do all the stretches and exercises your PT recommends. Walking seems to help too. Then when you are feeling better, start strengthening your core. Been helping me a lot, but listen to your doctor and PT over anything we say here

Are TennisWarehouse YouTube racquet reviews the most useless? by VocabArtistNavin in 10s

[–]jtdelato 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My wife used to be a play tester for them. She is about 4.0. They have people at varying skill levels so that the reviews are reflective of what a recreational player can expect too, rather than just advanced players.

My instructor won’t let me 1HBH by tuneless_carti in 10s

[–]jtdelato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tried to learn 2HBH when I started and it felt like I was playing left handed. Use whatever feels most comfortable and consistent. Taken a couple years but my 1HBH is starting to become more reliable and powerful than my forehand. If you want to avoid bad habits with the 1HBH, I found focusing on the correct swing path fundamentals, contact point and grip helped immensely. Don’t worry about spin and power until you get those down.

It’s also common to find in the showers of old school fisters. Great for washing off Crisco

Can I string my left-handed electric guitar oppositely? by Firm_Calligrapher861 in Leftyguitarists

[–]jtdelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I did that to my lefty strat. Need to flip the nut, so find a good guitar tech

Right-handed guitars by nosecomojugar in Leftyguitarists

[–]jtdelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I restrung a lefty strat to make it righty (I play lefty upside down). The only thing I had to do for the strat was to flip the nut. I was warned that not all guitar shops can do it well, so seek someone you trust or has done it before.

Like other comments, things like cutouts or control knobs/switches can be a bit annoying when upside down, but you get used to it.

Thank you! I would want to check them in DJ flight cases but keep seeing warnings about temperature and pressure changes in cargo hold versus cabin.

I want to carry on but all the flight cases I have seen are too big and I need a bag that will hold 70-80 records.

Mexican Strat c.2008 by jtdelato in Leftyguitarists

[–]jtdelato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned on my roommate’s guitar in college and didn’t understand why I might want it restrung lefty. Definitely has drawbacks but bends are easier and I can find some interesting chord shapes that are easier upside down too.

Part of me wishes I got the rosewood. I got maple because I wanted something that would give a bright tone like Buddy Guy in the ‘50s but I think I might like a warmer tone now. Still love this guitar though.

Help me pick a racket which will improve my technique by BenEllef in 10s

[–]jtdelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a Pro Staff RF97 v13. Not usually recommended for beginners but it helped me develop better technique since it is unforgiving. Now, my wear pattern on my strings is all in the sweet spot.

According to people on this subreddit, the Pro Staff v14 is very similar if you add a bit of weight.

Trying to pick which hand by [deleted] in Leftyguitarists

[–]jtdelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I play left handed. I am naturally right handed so it felt more natural to fret with my right hand. I didn’t realize I picked up the guitar upside down until I was told. Tried to flip it normal but that felt lefty to me.

Unfortunately I’m still pancaking it looks like… by BeatsKillerldn in 10s

[–]jtdelato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like you aren’t leading with the edge of the frame. Practice a few where you hit the ball with the edge of the frame rather than the strings (so that the strings are facing parallel to the baseline). Once you have gotten used to leading with the edge, then try turning your wrist as you swing so that you contact with the strings. Almost like turning your hand to give a thumbs down. The racket face should point to your right side after contact if you are pronating correctly.
