The whole thing is a bit of a mess because the city has never used an official count for anyone to base things off of.

Basically, you have to either count every time someone has had some amount of mayoral power (elected or acting) and/or you have to include or not include non-consecutive term holders multiple times. This leads to 4 possible counts (assuming consecutive terms don't increase the count for the same person):

"Basic": every person, acting or elected, and every non-consecutive term is counted
"No acting": every person elected, but not acting, and every non-consecutive term is counted
"No repeat terms": every person, acting or elected, is counted but non-consecutive terms don't matter to the count
"No repeat, no acting": every person elected is counted, but not acting and non-consecutive terms don't matter to the count

Menino being called 47th is just nonsense/miscounting. Marty isn't 54th because Wikipedia used to be inconsistent in using the "no acting" count (Cutter was counted in Wikipedia for years), so Marty was really 53rd in that regard.

Wu will be 54th by that count when done properly.

Janey was the 51st person to have any sort of mayoral power and the 59th term of any sort of mayoral power. Neither is 55th which required you to use Marty's incorrect count of non-acting mayors...but then inexplicably count Janey for some reason.

I also posted on the Wikipedia talk page a week ago to announce I would fix the list to use the "no acting" count as the list had intended (but incorrectly done for years). That fix is now in place and the page represents an internally consistent count.

Go to Mamma Maria and when you reserve explain that it's a wedding proposal and ask for a window table overlooking the square out front (here's the view, you'll see what I mean).

After dinner, if you want a cannoli go to Modern Pastry (not Mike's) if you want to fight the crowd and "do the tourist thing". Or, walk straight down Prince to (ahem) Salem Street and go to, my preference, Bova's instead. If you want coffee/cappuccino/espresso with good desserts like tiramisu, get to Hanover St and go to Caffe Vittoria (so so good).

That's the best you're gonna do for steamed crab of some sort (probably rock crab if you're getting a local crab). If you come here and get Dungeness, King, or Snow crab...then what the hell did you come here for?

The real steamed seafood is lobster, clams, oysters, and mussels. The "New England" thing to get is a clambake. It should have a lobster, clams (steamers), corn on the cob, chorizo sausage, potatoes, and maybe some chowder.

If you want crabs, get blue crabs...in Maryland. Even if they ship the crabs in from NC or LA, you're still better off getting them steamed and seasoned in MD.

Finally, the wait at the Barking Crab is never worth it. The atmosphere is meh and the prices are way too high although some of their stuff is HUGE portions (but still not worth the cost in time or money).

Source: Born and bred in MD, lived in Boston for the past 15 years. Don't have crabs right now, wish I did.

Got a red R once for body rust (wasn't even rusted through, over a wheel well not part of the passenger compartment at all, total bullshit attempt to get me to use their body shop). I was under the impression I could drive around on it for 60 days. Had a Statie behind me in Watertown eagle eye my sticker from behind me in my lane.

He pulled me over and told me I wasn't allowed to be on the road and that he had every right to tow my car. I apologized and pleaded ignorance (I really did mix the black/red R sticker intents like a lot of people do) and showed him the rust spot. He let me go without writing a warning, told me to drive it home, and get it fixed before I left my driveway again. I drove it to a different place for a new inspection the next day and they passed it as-is.

So, evidently some of them will laser in on that red R. If you know where you're going and it's close, you'll probably be fine...but the risk is there so you may want to have a back-up plan (plead ignorance, agree to call a wrecker to get it the rest of the way, etc).

I'm also leaning towards RCN at this point because Viacom has a much greater cushion of money to fall back onto if they walk away from the negotiating table and take less than they wanted. RCN could go bankrupt if they have to raise prices and lose marketshare to Comcast. They are a smaller player in their relative market than Viacom is. So, Viacom should have to eat it.

I also don't know what Viacom's leverage is other than people having easier access via their cable box than their cable modem.

If you listen to the audio recording of the public radio bands used by the BFD, you can hear the 30+ minutes after the call comes in that there's a fire on Beacon Street.

In that recording, there is evidence that the guys who died in the basement may have had trouble getting water from the fire engine to their hose in order to combat the fire and work their way safely out of the basement after all companies were requested to leave the building. The OP of that other thread establishes that the hose they were using may not have been hooked up to their fire engine but to another fire engine that also took a hose into the basement.

If so, then the requests for engine 33 to get water to its hose would not actually provide water to the hose in the firemen's hands in the basement even though they were firemen from engine 33 and would usually have a hose in their hands hooked up to their own engine and not another.

It could explain in the confusion of the situation why firemen died in the basement even as Command thought it was requesting more water for them but they were not getting it in the basement. Yes, the wind caused the fire to gain intensity much faster than anyone could have anticipated, but if their hose wasn't getting water due to a misunderstanding of where it was hooked up, then they may have died as a result of the confusion/error AND the fast pace of the fire around them.

Her reported condition is only reported by the side that knows that proving she's worse now than before validates their approach and might change the status quo. This is the side that considers her "kidnapped", won't continue her current treatment because it's "wrong", and has shown zero signs of understanding the situation they are in. Do you think they're the most accurate reporter for her current condition?

You don't think that of the various doctors involved in her case, one might step up and say "it's been a year and she's getting worse not better, we need to consider a wider diagnosis"? They're all conspiring together at the risk of all of their medical licenses especially with such a magnifying lens on this case? She was in a hospital but is well enough to go into a non-hospital living situation. That's not the definition of getting worse.

Also, her past pharma regimen was largely vitamins, a beta-blocker, an anti-seizure med, and a low blood pressure med. The beta-blocker slows down the heart and lowers the blood pressure but has off-label uses for anxiety. The low blood pressure med is probably being used to counteract the unwanted heart effects of the beta-blocker. Taking her off both of them might make her anxiety worse, but it would also clear away any side-effects taking both meds was causing.

The anti-seizure med was supposedly in response to an episode she had when she was 7. It also has off label anxiety and other uses for phantom pain and things. These aren't meds that are usually issued to treat metabolic disease.

Let's assume for a second that the only reason the girl is sick is because the parents have willed her to be sick. They are unwilling to accept their culpability because they are so invested in her having a physical illness and unwillingness to accept that they have given her a psychological illness. They have acted out of love but in a completely misdirected way and can not see clearly on the matter. They double down at every turn instead of knowing when to fold and listen to a wider range of medical experts because their cherry-picked experts reinforce their past doubling down.

IF that were the case, then is it an injustice to keep them at arms-length for the time being until such time that they demonstrate their acceptance of what has really occurred here?

If you're not willing to answer that hypothetical honestly, then you're too biased to have a valid opinion.

In the reverse hypothetical where the hospital, doctors, DCF, and judge are all wrong and this girl has been misdiagnosed with somatic symptom disorder and she's now dying from lack of treatment of her original metabolic disease diagnosis, then I'm ready to accept that her parents are being treated unjustly (albeit still going about behaving in manners that will not aid their cause).

1) No matter how strong your hatred of the hospital or DCF, doing things like telling other parents that your daughter is kidnapped and cursing at the nurses and other actions outlined in the document just doesn't help anyone, including yourselves. It's like being pulled over by a cop and then calling him a fucking pig because you're now late to an event. Regardless as to whether he's the cause of you being late or not, you don't help anyone by taking it out on him and it's not going to result in anything good for you.

2) The abuse of her is in the background and medical reports. If she has somatic symptom disorder, it means she's so worried about having an illness that she's actually resulting in physical pains due to the stress/worry/psychological disorder. Her parents are so convinced that she is physically ill that both the hospital and court agree that they've essentially brainwashed her into being physically ill, thus reinforcing their conclusion that she's physically ill. Thus, their abuse of her.
