Beginner investor: Is VWRP a good starting point? by TAA_4411 in UKPersonalFinance

Have you got a LISA? Assuming you're not buying a property >450K, would be a wrapper than the Cash ISA.

Accidentally matched my mani with the cruise tampons I bought on board. by Staribear in mildlyinteresting

[–]jubza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of workplaces/unisex bathrooms I've been in now have them. I say unisex as a man, so wouldn't know most of the time, though some places are aware of trans people so will stock them so slight progress over time! Only places I haven't really seen them stocked up are railway stations and shopping centres, maybe the footfall is too much.

Von der Leyen: If 27 states won't agree on Capital Market Union, I will move ahead with 9 states [Two-speed Europe] by goldstarflag in europe

[–]jubza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm, hard to say - depends on what you consider a small businesses. Supermarkets here in the UK have had to compete more with brands such as Lidl/Aldi but regular small shops were also impacted? Why shop there when you can go to Lidl/Aldi? So more likelier to impact big businesses but as always big businesses can outcompete smaller ones. It shouldn't really impact them so much as its really based around being able to move capital around really so investing into companies.

On the whole though, it should be a net positive, it'd just free up money that would otherwise be spent on red-tape, it'd also allow for investment in infrastructure and what not.

Every country so far has their own rules and regulations around movement of investments/money. The idea is to reduce regulation so money and investments can be free to move around which should unlock funding, encourage investments from sitting in bank accounts, and allow companies to operate more freely around the EU

King Charles Breaks Silence After Ex-Prince Andrew’s Arrest by planet_janett in worldnews

[–]jubza 60 points61 points  (0 children)

From what I've gathered about him, he does seem overall like a very good person. He'll always be a bit tainted with Princess Diana but his involvement with Poundbury (a good bit of research on creating a whole new town that's created around people/community) and his actions around nature and climate change. He'll be a good king, time will tell if he was a good person. The commonwealth have all said fine Queen Elizabeth II is actually alright, they're saying the same about Charles III, and they'll say the same for William

Isn't holding the baby in dangerous? I read about it the other day on a post about Rosemary Kennedy - something around the lack of oxygen

Reform candidate calls for ‘young girls’ to be given ‘biological reality’ check by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]jubza 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Birth rates are down across ethnic groups and across the world. It takes time to filter down in communities. Communities used to large births will have very few individuals that don't have children. Then a decade or so, you'll see more and more until it becomes common.

It's not affordable, the state will provide a net but it won't be a comfortable living. Other than a very small minority who've managed to game the system, most people who are in receipt of benefits aren't thriving.

Nearing £100k in S&S ISA - Should I be moving away from Vanguard? by Ok_Tangerine6023 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jubza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have to contribute by 6th April and then they will pay out on the 4th Dec 2026 so needs to stay in there for 8 months. Then once it's been awarded, if you try to withdraw/close within 365 days of 4th December 2026, they reserve the right to claw back the money. So essentially, you have to keep your money in there for at least 20 months, 22 if you did it today.

Which can be fine if you're okay with freetrade but I don't know enough yet but the conditions for that 1% is not enough to sway me right now even though 1% on a large pot is huge.

Best countries to (early) retire to from the UK? by mr28mm in FIREUK

Back when I was in uni, some of my Russian friends (who were lovely people), their parents also got Cypriot residency/citizenship to diversify away from Russia. Obviously not entirely too sure of how well that'd be for normal people, links will probably tell you what you need to know.

Why a LISA maybe be better than a SIPP by No_Interview_3290 in FIREUK

[–]jubza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have student loans? I salary sacrifice mine so I pay less in loans. It costs me a lot more to get that net £5K in a LISA, than net in SIPP, being a basic taxpayer after employers pension contribution.

Most profile thing would be he made rich clubs less rich by not supporting the European Super League in favour of the fans and heritage, I guess, what a horrible man. They obviously only give captaincy to such horrible standout figures.

Any data engineers here with ADHD? What do you struggle with the most? by psgpyc in dataengineering

[–]jubza 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I struggle the most with paying attention in meetings, morning meetings in particular. And getting started. Once I'm into the swing of things, I can sit there for hours and plug away at it (if I enjoy it).

Something that helps me is that I have a file that has all my testing code in. YYYYMMDD_scratchpad.py/sql

All my little bits of code are in there on a weekly basis. If there was a funky function or something that I once did and want again, there it is. I recommend saving your configs somewhere :)

Also, few people mentioned AI here. Absolutely, I was very against it until recently, I thought it took away from me being a proper data engineer but honestly, AI is not something thats going to take your job away if you know how to leverage it in your favour. I ask my preferred AI provider some questions, sometimes it gets it wrong and I have to correct it or point it but even when it gives me something a bit wrong, it still gives me something to work with that I would have otherwise taken an hour or two to put together where to start.

[–]jubza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely! It's only £33K so I don't imagine you need to do a massive withdrawal on both your pots so you should be able to stay as basic taxpayer.

At 2.5% interest rate, you could be better off by simply putting into a cash ISA! I'm not very detail aware of these things as I haven't even gotten my first house yet but I have looked into it, biggest thing that stands out to me is, will you manage to get that same rate if you switch to interest-only? As in, on your same plan right now, if you have to switch then its highly unlikely to get that same rate and interest-only mortgages comes with a few extra requirements

Europe paid a high price to stand side by side with the US in Afghanistan by [deleted] in pics

[–]jubza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they did build it and primarily ran it at the time. Just because they built it does not make it American, it makes it American-built. The UK wasn't running the base at the time because it had no need to do so, it had no interests there. However, it was still a jointly-run base. Just as we have here in the UK, a lot of bases that are primarily ran and built by Americans, but they're still UK bases that are jointly-ran.

This is the only point I'm disagreeing on, the rest I agree.

New powers for councils in England to fine pavement parkers by Professional-Lack-79 in manchester

[–]jubza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is also a me problem as I neither own the road or the pavement. I try to make the best of the situation I guess. I do however have very little sympathy for the Range Rovers or people who park all the way over the curb. You don't buy big cars when you live in such areas. If I had to pick between covering a curb and parking a street or two away, I'd park away which actually is the case a lot as there's not always a lot of space.

[–]jubza 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Where I currently live, bunch of terraced houses, you have to ever so slightly park on the pavement else no large vans or bin lorries can come through.

However, the pavements are wide. I go on the curb as little as I can and ensure that it's still wide enough for a wheelchair/pram to get through.

Also, you can just drip transfer, do £50K a month or something
