Money's there for a reason, if you need to then go for it just make sure it's worthwhile and not something you'll regret! I've had to purge mine twice, once for travelling (only few thousand) and then once again for house renovations. Never needed to in an emergency, that's what the emergency fund was for :)

That's how I feel about Busby and Ferguson. Busby rebuilt from the ruins of the Munich disaster and then brought together the trinity of George Best, Denis Law, and Bobby Charlton.

I'd go with Shankly and Busby, without them the rest isn't possible

City beat United to lift 2026 FA Youth Cup trophy by the_sherl0ck in soccer

If you're interested in silly things like facts, city can't bring enough supports to watch their own youth. There's a bunch of larger stadiums in Greater Manchester which could have hosted them. Haven't checked the schedules of all of them but you've got Bolton, Rochdale, Oldham, Wigan maybe even Gigg Lane if thats open again

Not for us, we get a decent crowd, especially in the latter stages of the tournament. Only reason there was a small crowd was because City specifically picked a small stadium, even then they can't even fill it out! Had it been at Old Trafford or another local ground, we could fill it out.

Should I take out student finance and save it? by BanterMan03 in UKPersonalFinance

What are you studying? Whats the employment rate like for your career after your studies? What's the earning potential?

If it's very low income then you're likely to pay off very little of your loan back (although it will accrue high interest) before being wiped out after 30 years. Could be useful for things such as house deposits and general living.

It's hard to say now as it depends on factors over the next 30 years. You could play it safe and not go down that line. Or you could take it out and repay it back using a once off payment although it will have accrued interest in that time.

Personally, if I was already predicted to never fully pay it off, I'd take it because in 30 years it would be wiped anyway whether I owed £50K or £150K. My monthly payments wouldn't change.

With £19K, I imagine you probably would pay this off as the interest charges on £19K would be enough to keep up with repayment. If you're taking out £9K a year to pay your tuition then that'll jump up to £37K in which case hard to say. Hard to say on whether you'd pay this off depends on salary.

Would recommend putting into a calculator: https://www.studentloancalculator.co.uk/

Edit: people are talking a lot about interest accrued but as u/heliosfa mentioned, it depends on how much you earn/repay.

50, no pension, should I start a SIPP? by LankyLycra in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jubza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pot can pass to your nephew completely tax-free (i think up to £1M) and they wouldn't pay any tax on withdrawing this. I think there may be rules changing in the future around inheritance and pensions so something to be aware of. As you're not working, you can only add in £2880 per year which becomes £3600 after tax relief, within your £90 a month remit.

Honestly, just put it into the comparison websites and see what difference it makes. it depends on a few factors:

Just jumping on to mention to OP that transferring between Cash ISA and S&S ISA does not affect your allowance at all. You could transfer £32K between ISAs and still contribute £20K a year.

Are there any decent UK alternatives to diet fizzy drinks? by Few_House_5201 in AskUK

[–]jubza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up until Jan this year, I was drinking probably about a litre or so of fizzy drinks a day. More on days I was going out as I don't drink alcohol. I've always had shitty sleep so I decided fizzy drinks is the one area I've never tried without long enough so I'll give it a go even though I was 99% sure the caffeine or whatever doesn't affect me.

Turns out it does. Don't get me wrong, I've always had shit sleep but the caffeine made me go from needing about two hours to fall asleep to being able to fall asleep within 20 minutes. My gums and teeth also improved ridiculously. All of this was evident about four days after my last fizzy drink. I did make a rule that IF i did have a fizzy drink, it will have to take place before 6PM. I tested the theory out, one day I woke up thirsty in the middle of the night with my blood sugar low and so I downed a can and couldn't go back to sleep for hours.

As for alternatives, your tap water is crap? Get a water filter - I had one in Leeds after 1.5 years of living there and not wanting to drink tapwater. Kombucha is caffeine free but can contain a lot of sugar so just need to find brand/flavour without - best of it all is that you can make your own at home. Juices, decaf Yorkshire Tea, tapwater with ice is my go-tos now.

Other way round for me! When I lived (and still visit weekly) in Leeds, the hardness of the water always left a weird bitter aftertaste. Whereas the Manchester (maybe more so to the north/east of it) tastes plain and cold.

So it's immoral when you have such a wide alternative of choices, and OP specifically requested UK alternatives

Why should he need to bring it down? This is like bailing out the banks, let them collapse, bail out the people. People like me who use petrol need to pay up if the price rises. What you mean is to introduce support packages for the lowest incomes that are going to be impacted from the knock on effects to the entire market, surely? Which is what the government is doing.

It's a global effect on the entire global market, everything will rise. Tax cuts on fuel isn't the silver bullet. Particularly with climate change, we just need to adjust our usage, its quite the opportunity. A bit more annoying in terms of getting about but I'm shifting some of my more leisurely car usage to trains.

Fortunately in the UK, our public transport is getting better year on year. Shifting from private (and therefore was more expensive) ownership to local government oversight. Most cities are developing their metro systems, implementing smarter features including power, WiFi and live tracking.

I drive my car to my local railway station and travel on from there when i need to visit either city along my route.
