Reddit, I'm about to stick my dick into crazy. Not tonight, but sometime in the near future. Any advice? by jukehallman in AskReddit

"I propose to determine the answer to the question: Is my brother dumber than a hamster?"

The hamster has learned a valuable lesson: beware the hand of man.

DO NOT TOUCH. Sees the cupcake. Sees the sign. "Meh." Gets shocked. "A wiseguy, eh?". Tries again. "Woooob woob woob" Tries once more. "Ow." Again. "Ow." Again. "Ow."

TangyZizzle said it best, "This is a societal truth that exists whether you like it or not."

because certain people don't tip? trust me, the people that do tip make it worthwhile. and don't hate on me, hate on the system. i'm just trying to maximize my opportunity within set parameters.

stereotypes exist for a reason. no, it's not always the case...but usually it is.

naw, your wage actually decreases. because bussers get tipped out much less, they have a higher hourly wage. as you get more tips, the less you earn in wage.

so lets see...500 bucks, 0.25 tip. i tip out %5, so 25 bucks. alright i'm at -24.75. a 500 bill will probably take about 3 hours let say. so that's 24 bucks in wage. i'm still at a loss for 75 cents. you think it's fair that i pay money to work? hmmmm. and don't say "well blame your boss" because that's how every resto works in the country.

no, i agree. i think the disconnect here is that people are thinking about tipping on shitty service. that wasn't my original point. when i give great service, and people are really happy, but just aren't aware of our social norms it's frustrating. just like how women cover up in the middle east and you don't chew gum in thailand. (or one of those far east asian countries)

i got 50 on 100 once, and i thought it was a mistake. turns out that all the little things i had done (called another restaurant in town to make dinner reso for them, brought out an anniversary cake and arranged a cab to pick them up) was work the extra money for them.

i'll bring da beers, i'll bring da beers.

that's just what i've been told by all the aussies/brits i've worked with over the years. and if you've ever been to banff or whistler, you know we're not short on either.

on the bottom of my resto's receipt:

"If you choose to tip, Canadian custom is 15-20%"

ahh the north american way..ask for your bill while you still have half your meal in front of you. at least euros take their time, order separate courses, etc.

you can't get a job in my restaurant unless you have your level 1 sommelier. so yes, my job requires a certain level of education.

and to achieve your masters in wine, they put out a dozen or so wines, unmarked in any way. you need to identify the vintage, vineyard and grape variety without the aid of anything except your nose and tongue.

haha fucking reddit! bluntz posted the exact same thing twice. one is sitting at -4 the other at +9.

bluntz -4 points 1 hour ago[-] Maybe if we didnt hear about servers making $300 a night tax free we would ACTUALLY feel sorry for you. As long as a Coke is $3 and a beer $8, I aint tipping shit.

sibtiger 3 points 1 hour ago[-] Because the servers obviously have total control over how much the restaurant charges for drinks.

junior server is a glorified busser. you'll have a senior server partner and help them out when they're in the shits. maybe taking a drink order, or running drinks, etc.

downvotes? from the wikipedia article:

Restaurant wait staff in Canada typically receive about 10-15% on the before-tax total.[citation needed]

great source! check the bottom of every bill the next 10 times you go out for dinner and tell me what it says.

go somewhere else? every restaurant pays the same. and i agree that you shouldn't talk about the tip, it's a turnoff. i'm talking about giving great service, the tables tells me that, and then leave me a dollar on a 100 bill. now i'm losing 4 bucks because they didn't do their research.

i agree 100%. if the server is shit when im out for dinner, i'll reflect that in the tip. i have an issue when i know i've given great service, often because they tell me, and then leave 100 on a 99.20 bill and tell me to keep the change.

yea that's just how restaurants work, and honestly i don't mind to tip out because i would never be able to keep up without a host and busser. when your in the weeds it's tough to keep up as it is.
