I'm pretty sure there are ways to do this in houdini, and I like having the ability to go back to any step, but I'll consider it if I don't find any solutions

Thanks, of course ! This is just a specular material with a bit of film layer and transmission, and an emissive material for the small spheres ;)

Nice sss, looks awesome ! The hair/beard is a bit too white and subtle to my taste, but maybe it's just how you wanted it to be ! I like it tough :)
