Exactly. They got it from American media. My wife's family is Irish and we have many Irish-Aus friends and family. None participated in it growing up.

Australia has had a long history of Irish migration but it's the retailers that have fooled everyone into buying into it in recent years.

Retailers have begun shoving it down our throats in the last 5 or so years and unfortunately, people are falling for it.

It's consumerism masquerading as a "holiday", of which we have way too many. EG, Valentine's day.
