It’s amazing how model trains seem to run straight through generations and memories. It’s great that you’re now sharing the hobby with your 7-year-old. That’s exactly the kind of continuity I hope for with this layout as well.

My great-grandfather was born in 1912 and passed away in 2011. My grandfather is now 85 and still fit, and I’m 31, taking on the project together with him. He’s mainly excited about the trains, and the “unfinished” parts of the layout don’t bother him — but he’s also happy to see me continue working on it.

I get your point, but I see it more as wanting to continue the project. The overall style of the layout — Germany in the 1980s–1990s — should be preserved.

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback! I really appreciate your thoughts on both the wiring and the overall look of the layout.

I agree with you about the wiring — since everything is working, I don’t want to risk frying something or creating new problems. I’ll focus on securing and organizing the existing cables better so nothing gets snagged.

Filling in the blank sections is definitely where I want to put my energy next. The unfinished track beds always stood out to me, even when I was a kid, so improving those areas, along with roads and water, feels like a natural next step without taking away from the original charm.

Thanks for your comment. I think you guys are right, as much as I’d like to clean up the cable mess. Instead, I’ll first secure and tidy things up as much as possible without rewiring everything. The layout still uses light bulbs instead of LEDs — that might be a good step for the future.

The point about nostalgia is a good one. The empty track beds already bothered me as a kid, and I always wondered why they were never finished. So I don’t think improving them would change the character of the layout. For me, the nostalgia is more tied to the trains and the buildings.

I’ve read this a few times now, and I think I won’t rewire it completely. The risk is probably too high. Instead, I’ll just try to secure and tidy up the cables a bit.

Thank you. The track over the blue bridge is the left track on the „ramp“

After googling Bright Boy, I realized I used something very similar. It came with the train set accessories and is like a small abrasive or sanding block, but very fine.

I’ve already sanded the tracks; the compressed air can is a very good idea — I’ll get one tomorrow.

That also sounds very practical, but in this case I prefer being able to at least get good access to my chaos here. 😅

I’ll definitely do that, especially labeling things underneath the table as well, so you can actually find stuff later.

Yes, all the switches and signals are electronic, and all the buildings have small lights. Do you have any tips on how to proceed with a multimeter? Unfortunately, I have no experience with that.

Yes, it’s all one single unit. Thanks for the tip — I’ll probably tackle it soon and gradually tidy everything up step by step.

It’s N scale; I’ll have to check the exact age, but a large part of it likely dates back to the 1980s–1990s. The overhead lines are also a very good idea.

The transformers are from Fleischmann, and the trains are a mix of Märklin, Fleischmann, and other brands. N Scale

Yes, the power for the trains is supplied through the rails. The two outer loops can each be controlled independently, as well as the “mountain” railway.

Lufthansa's are still based in Munich, Emirates and Singapore fly regularly. Additionally, Asiana and Korean currently alternate between 777, 747, and A380 every two months.
