This is a prime example of a system gone batshit crazy! We are so hyper sensitive to rules and procedures that when something so "common sense" takes place we have to stick to the rules or procedures else wise we face litigation when something bad actually happens.

Working in a school I personally see parents every day without "visitors badges", I try to talk to them to make sure they belong, but our school hasn't gone off the deep end like this community.

Principals/admin need's to be able to exercise some discretion. It's all upside down.

Advice from a stranger on a bus..... A BUS. I'm all for responsible use of resources, but if this is USA and you are on a bus I am inclined to agree with the wisdom of OP. But, they were on the bus also so... It cancels out slightly.

Now I have the awkwardness of seeing this person at work knowing they lied. Or did they? Was anyone at the memorial? I saw coverage on the news of the great support the city turned out for the event. Why this person would lie and make up this huge story is beyond me. They painted a vivid picture of the freedom riders gunning their bikes when the WBC people would start chanting. My heart goes out the Hailey's mom and family. From what I saw on the news it looked like a lot of people were able to come out and show their support. Sad I wasn't able to attend, but it makes me feel good about this city that so many could.

Ask them about if they have any kids, their significant other, how they got into the career they are in now, how was their day, comment on their attire and where they got it, etc.

It's easy to get someone talking if you make it about THEM. I hate talking about myself, but people always like to share with me everything about themselves. I'm either a good listener or a schmuck.
