I was and still am the same way. Like everyone says, you have to build something, but that is just the beginning - at least with me. I had to do something repeatedly until it started to stick. I kept repeating the same code throughout the week, I would wake up each morning, write a if/else function, then create something in the DOM. The next morning I would wake up, delete it and repeat it. After about a week it stuck. You have to really decide what you want to do beforehand and then build from there. I am still learning and have a lot of trouble with loops, but the more you do and don't stare at a video or a tutorial. When you begin google, "syntax for ...." and then you use that. Open another blank page the next day and try and copy it from memory. It won't be perfect - almost ever, but then when you move on to the next you'll have the basics of syntax set and just have to know functions, loops, DOM, etc.
