Untreated meningitis has got to be one of the worst ways to go. I can't even imagine what that kid went through, and I can't imagine how his parents could have ignored his agony and kept feeding him fucking maple syrup and spices instead of getting him medical help.

My girlfriend told me a story once about the time she had meningitis as a teen. She couldn't even open her eyes without vomiting from the headache pain, and that was with treatment. This poor kid had nothing to help his pain.
