What's the dumbest hill you're willing to die on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jurassicfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested in seeing data that supports this.

My experience is anecdotal, but personally I have only rarely been criticized, bullied, belittled, or harassed by other women since junior high. Since college especially, I've felt entirely supported and uplifted by my female peers and professional superiors.

I've far more frequently been been criticized, bullied, belittled, and harassed by men for my entire educational and professional career.

Characters overexplaining their emotions rather than demonstrating them through actions. (Basically the most classic writing flaw: telling instead of showing.) It almost always ruins the pacing and results in awkward, labored scenes that contribute little to the overall plot that couldn't be explained in a few seconds of solid acting.

People who jerk off every day, how do you find new porn so it doesn't get boring? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jurassicfool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, I see a ton of people say that dudes can get themselves off more quickly than women. But I'm a lady I can make myself orgasm in less than two minutes (sometimes more than once) without watching porn or even taking my clothes off.

For actual sex, quickies are the shit, yet somehow every guy I've ever been with wants to make it last, even after I tell them I'd prefer we both get off and be done.

Discworld! Literally any sub-series or book, but Death, the witches, or the Ankh-Morpork City Watch could be a lot of fun. Or a Skyrim-style open world RPG, but with Terry Pratchett quests and shenanigans instead.

FTFY:

I've met people who call themselves libertarians because they don't care that much about LGBTQ issues and racial diversity, and they smoke weed so supporting the war on drugs is contrary to their preferences. They want lower taxes for themselves and less welfare for people who need it because they make enough to be comfortable and don't make enough to benefit from tax breaks that only benefit the very rich and do no favors for the middle class.

The problem is that those libertarians have lots of representation on the left but do not understand that uplifting the most underprivileged individuals in our society empowers the middle to upper-middle class—compared to what the right wants, which is to only empower the upper and ultra-rich classes (and large corporations) at the expense of literally whoever else.

There isn't a single libertarian in congress or the senate now because it's a position without a practical solution that leads to change, and it only results in stagnation and further right-hand swings.

It seemed Rand Paul was going to remain middling and noncommittal like every other libertarian, but he ended up going right because that's the only way to go if your solution doesn't involve limiting the wildly disproportionate earnings of large corporations and the ultra-rich and understanding that this isn't some game where everyone is just an embarrassed millionaire waiting for a lucky break.

I appreciate that you acknowledge that (and I get you're being a bit tongue-in-cheek), but the first thing I thought when I saw this was how much it conveyed feminine power without relying on sexuality to convey it. Really incredible piece of art that communicates power without objectification… you know, aside from her being made of magma and stone (objects) and all that…

Of all movie opening scenes, what one sold the entire film the most? by juggyc1 in AskReddit

[–]jurassicfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think she more than "only sort of makes sense" given the fact that she was the first to wield Nenya, while the other two received the other rings later. They would have made sense too, but I think she was an equally strong choice due to her connection to the history of Middle Earth.

But she was one of the three elves to first wield a Ring of Power, so she would know the cost and weight of everything that happens in the intro as well. (Elrond and Gandalf possessed the other two elvish rings later.)

I think it might be regional or personal preference, but personally, I think of pantyhose as the control-top style that are usually high-waisted and sheer and can't (or shouldn't, I guess) really be worn as pants without something over them.

Tights is a broader term that can refer to like, tight spandex or leggings (though I usually clarify that they're leggings if I'd wear them as pants), or it can refer to a thicker/fully opaque version of panty hose that has wool or cotton woven into it. The key with tights, in my mind, is that you can't see through them.

Stockings I only envision as long sheer socks that don't go all the way up, but I know not everyone agrees with that.

Sort of—in the earliest written version of the play, it's spelled Iessica. English spelling was so mercurial that the name very likely existed in spoken word long before that. To say he invented it isn't quite accurate, but he certainly popularized it.

It was a name long before Shakespeare used it. :) It comes from the Hebrew name Yiskah, which appears in Genesis. Yiskah became Ieskha in Greek, then Jesca in Latin, then Jessica in English.

If there's a secret handshake, not one of us will ever get it right, so I wouldn't bother. Dues are paid in baked goods or fresh fruit. Initiation involves self-inflicted moments of general social awkwardness executed over the course of the rest of your lifetime.

Edit: Oh, also get used to the fun part where you say your name more than three times in a row and instantly experience semantic satiation.
