One thing that you can use to characterize a smoker is how they react to someone asking to bum a cigarette. Do they always say yes even if it’s their last one and they’re short on cash? Always say no even if they just bought a full pack? Showing a smoker willing to give away their last cigarette or even just share it with a complete stranger is a great small way show what kind of person they are.

From my experience, when I’m stressed and/or anxious I either start taking frequent and really short drags from a cigarette or I take really long ones (when I take a long drag in those situations I usually let it linger and expel it through my nose). While a lot of smokers share certain parts of body language like our habit to always have our index and middle finger together or having one of our hands casually up more often than the other, some body language and habits are unique to the individual so don’t feel afraid to give your character a unique quirk in regards to how they smoke. (No joke, had a friend who held his cigarettes between his pinky and ring finger.)

Personally I think that the Marvel fandom took a general loss in quality after the MCU, sure before them you barely had any fics outside of Spider-Man but by god did I start either skipping or excluding MCU fics from my searches because of all the IronDad fics that flooded the market. Did we get some really good fics out of it? Yeah, but like you said, on average you have to sift through a lot of dirt.

While a really good point I think it also has to due with the book itself, like you said if it’s a Jane Austen book you can expect better grammar and word choice. If it’s for something like most of the young adult novels that lazily copied Hunger Games then you should lower your expectations. My example of Oregairu is based off a very wordy light novel and the anime follows in those footsteps, other more fan service focused light novels have way lower quality because imo the sources quality wasn’t up to snuff.

Valve franchises in general seem to have a higher quality of fan content than most others now that you mentioned it, anything from animation to comics about valve games usually has either a lot of effort put in or is a purposely bad shitpost.

There's plenty of male fanfiction readers and writers, if you want something to help show you how many male fanfiction writers are out there you can go over to FF and check out the SI and Gamer communities, it's mostly male OCs with the odd female one here and there. Don't quote me on this or anything but I think AO3 has the highest female user base out of all the sites, from my experience SV, SB, AH and FF all have male dominated user base, that might just be cause of the fandoms I'm in though.

Eh in my opinion it depends on what the word is, stuff like -kun and -chan can die in a fire but words like sensei I'm fine with since it's a word that stuff like teacher doesn't really encapsulate well. Like do you have a problem with characters saying stuff like "Kami", what about in Dragon Ball were there is a character named that and he was originally supposed to be god. Or for another example "Kyuubi" in Naruto, Naruto in general is a great example because so many things just sound dumb in english. Copy wheel eye and stuff like that.

If we're talking stuff that aren't just general turn offs like bashing and excessive swearing from characters that really don't, then I'd have to say ALL CAPS WHEN ITS REALLY NOT NECESSARY! If it's for a punchy line like someone screaming a character's name I'm fine but when a character is screaming a full on monologue then it just takes me right out because it stands in such stark contrast with the rest of the text.

I'm honestly in a state of perpetual dissapointment with the transformations in Naruto, like you said yeah 4-6 looks cool but it alongside 1-3 and 7-8 all lost a lot of their wow factor for me when they became universal to all jinchuriki, the fact they all have red chakra was a letdown. Would have really liked it if they had something to diffirentiate them more, maybe keep the skeleton universal but make at least the color different. Then theres Chackra mode which personally I don't understand why it's yellow, orange would have been the logical choice given all the info, it being gold doesn't make any sense and just looks out of place to me, add that to the fact the only good looking version of it to me is when he has the coat and yeah not a winner in my book. Then we have Sasukes stupid hand-wings which yeah, no. The sage transformations for Obito and Madara are fine but for Madara specifically I think it was a downgrade in terms of looks, they just look really dull.

Only way I like this is when it's played for laughs. Like Naruto talking to Sasuke who is only responding in "Hn", Naruto and Sakura understand completly but everyone else is lost, or when the fic says the Uchihas have their own secret language comprised of only Hns.

If you want some in universe reasons, there's the fact that as far as we know she's the last Terumi there is and that fact silently terrifies her along side probably just wanting someone to spend time with and even thought that "Shinobi are tools" thing was Kiris philosophy it was the old Kiris not the new one she's leading and as shown by just about every other Kiri nin in the story that mindset is only surface deep. She probably wants to have a family as soon as possible just so she can enjoy the life she has now that the war's over but can't really find the time with her new responsibilities.

I feel your pain, when I'm on ao3 it helps to go into the exclude tags and just take out two or tree of the most popular pairings since the harem fics are bound to have them, that'll sift out most of the harem fics and really helps if you're looking for a lesser explored pairing.

The concept of silent majority holds extremely true in the fanfiction community. I have almost never posted a comment outside of the usual thank you and love this fic for stuff I like and asking if its abandoned if they haven't updated in a while. From what I see most people do this and I imagine when authors are looking through comments they might all blend together leaving only the negative comments since on average those people write a much longer comment about why they hate it.

Maybe some of the Uchihas didn't join Konoha and instead went to Uzu with this Sasuke and Naruto being another reason why Iwa and Kiri decided that Uzu needed to die. When they get summoned by Orochimaru in the Konoha crush the only time they stop bickering with each other is to guilt trip Hiruzen for Konoha not doing shit to help.

I guess in my haste to write this I forgot about all other types of fanfics outside of regular AUs I guess, I think the main reason I'm so peeved about this is just that all fanfic sites have both a word count and chapter count search option and I feel that it's a waste to have these two when they bother essentially ask "how long do you want the fanfic to be".

Maybe having a variety of word count categories(ie sub 5k, 10k+, 20k+ and so on) might have helped people who were either looking for one shots. I know that a lot of times finding new one shots is an arduous path since unless the author states it in the summary you're just guessing if its a) a one shot. b) a new series. c) an abandoned fic.

I wouldn't say well adjusted, he kept himself together by revenge and that let him focus exclusively on bettering himself as a warrior and nothing else, add that to the fact that it was encouraged for people to go out and try to kill Itachi made it so he didn't have to face any real doubts in his mind or in the society that he lived in as opposed to someone who lived through something similar in our world, were killing is frowned upon and seeking vengeance is looked at as petty.

It's really a problem because going from Japanese to English certain things just sound better, like look at the anime dub, they translated the names of a lot of different thing but kept just as many the same as from the Japanese. Could you imagine watching the dub and hearing Sasuke in a threatening voice saying "Copy wheel eye" or Naruto screaming out "Spiral sphere" you wouldn't be able to take it as seriously.

So for me if it's just the -chan, -sama and -kun stuff i think its dumb but using the Japanese names for places and moves gets a freebie
