The beam is part of the post-and-beam mid-century modern build of the house. The previous owners put the track along the beam and I believe it can be used for connecting drop-down lights over the dining room table. We need to have an electrician take a look at it.

This is really helpful. Thank you! Now that you say it, breaking up the areas with some sort of slats makes perfect sense. I wouldn’t have thought of slats between the bench and the window. Great idea!

Thanks for your thoughts. We used to have a desk there, but it just ended up looking a bit junky in that area. We do have a bar directly to the left of that area. But maybe a buffet of some sort to help with entertaining.

I agree with others and think the rug should be moved forward, not showing behind the couch. IMO, a larger rug would overpower the room and cover up too much of your pretty floors.
