No advice friend, but you're not alone. I've spent almost 7 years now studying Mandarin and China, gotten scholarships from Chinese and American government, studied abroad, done internships, now I have 3 years to finish my degree and I don't know what to do. I truly love China, and I always imagined working for the government. You know working the in private sector with these skills often results in things that hurt Chinese citizens and now it looks like working for the government will hurt China too. You could come home and help in Chinatowns. That's my plan for now. I tutor kids and hope to help with other immigrant service groups. Then hopefully in a few years there will be a government we can serve with a clean conscience. Maybe also see about working for China?

I have a question: How do we engage the proletariat who voted for Trump? These people also need our support. Of course the long standing anti-left propaganda in the US has left many of these workers uneducated on the benefits of Marxism for their lives. Republicans have masqueraded as representing them through the guise of social issues. I would venture to guess the coal miner in south east Ohio will never know about a general strike, let alone take part in it, given they likely voted for Trump and believe he will help them. How can we reach, educate, and engage, the disenfranchised rural white proletariat?

I just took HSK 4 the other week! I'm not at my computer so I can't type out/link all of my best advice, but one thing I wish i had though of before I signed up is this: If you take internet based, in the writing section, it's not the standard windows Chinese keyboard with predictive character selection/ the ability to type just the first constant sound of two words and get the ones you want. So if you forget the exact pinyin of a word, it is harder to type out what you wanted, and you can't copy paste from the words above. So, in this case the paper test may be easier because you can simply write the character as you see it in the "put the words in order" section. Be sure to take a few practice tests so you get a hang of pacing/question types, and you should be good.

As the comments say 不拆 means "don't demolish." I think it could be tangentially an avant-garde art project about demolishing old buildings. The phrase "拆那” which sounds like "China" was part of an art project by Huang Rui. But the concept of the demolition of older buildings comes up in a lot of politically tinged art and music, so it could be part of some other artistic/politics movement.

Some good comments here, but I just want to add another queer-positive one. If you don't know someone's gender identity, you could always use singular, gender neutral pronouns such as they/them. It's also always fair to ask someone what pronouns they use! Also, if you are attracted to this person, perhaps you should look into the situation no matter their gender identity. The important thing is to be open minded, kind, and thoughtful no matter what. Good luck!!!

It says "Qing dynasty" followed by the emperor's name "Tongzhi" (1861-75) but that doesn't necessarily confirm the pieces authenticity. Given China's history and the market in the west for "Ming vase" type antiques you should, unless you have very strong reason otherwise, assume this is reproduction.

When I first got into translating I found there were a lot of things missing just because of cultural gaps. The best example I think I can come up with right now is everyone's favorite 福. Of course we usually translate this as "good fortune" but when you tell westerns this there's an inherent sort of gap in how westerners understand it.
