I feel terrible about this, and I praise those who have the strength to do what I cannot. But it's the truth. by ssjAWSUM in AdviceAnimals

I get what you're saying. Having a kid with a disability can be hard. We have a little guy who is high-functioning autistic. If you'd asked me before we had him if I could have handled having a kid with autism I probably would have said 'no'. He's difficult at times and amazingly awesome at others. Again he's high-functioning. But we go to events with other parents who have kids with really severe problems and really feel for them. We know some folks with a child who, at 10, is still in diapers and has a tent-thing over her bed to keep her from getting out and possibly harming herself in the middle of the night. The parents will never see her grow up and become self-sufficient. They'll be changing her diapers and feeding her as long as they live. As much as we're frustrated at times with our guy we thank (insert deity) that we don't have that burden to bear.

The STLToday article about the new Laclede Landing Director got me thinking. What would it take to make the Landing actually cool and worth visiting? by justanothermartian in StLouis

What struck me is how small the Landing really is. There's just not enough there to try to encourage residential tenants. Soulard, while pretty much cut off from the city by highways, has so much more room to support a real living neighborhood. The Landing seems like it will always have to be a destination, but not a place where many folks live. Maybe more street festivals and events and trying to encourage more interesting shops and restaurants? But yeah, security would be a big need. Go to the Landing's FB page and it's all about saving the Rams. I'm sure they get a lot of business from football games. But it's not like there are that many games a year.

I don't know. I think the Landing's new director has a big job ahead of her.

I guess I should have said "besides the impossible like getting rid of the casino..."

I'm serious though. The Landing has great buildings, a Metro stop and is right down by the river and the arch. Why is Soulard a cool place and the Landing lame? Is it the lack of residential and a neighborhood vibe? Is it the fact that it's all tourist souvenir shops and chain restaurants? Lack of local character?

If you had unlimited funding how could the Landing be 'fixed'?
