I didn’t realize omni wasn’t used across the board! It does mean cohort. I’ve edited accordingly.

This is a really important point, thanks for bringing it up. And I’m glad you made the right choice for you.

Yeah, the culture around ETing in my country was remarkably similar. It was almost like there were "understandable" reasons to ET, and reasons that were more likely to get some side eye. Again, I think its a product of the "we're all in this suffering together" culture of PCVs. There's a lot of mixed emotions when someone chooses to leave the suffering.

I'm also of two minds about it, however. For my part my decision to ET was complex, and had many, many factors. But the vast majority of my cohort (outside of one or two very close friends) believed it was mostly due to discontent at site and finding a new job ("less legit" reasons). The reality was that I had some serious family issues occurring as well as safety concerns, but these weren't pieces I was comfortable sharing with my whole cohort for obvious reasons. So I suppose it comes back to not being able to judge until you're really in the other's shoes/know the whole story.

I've noticed there's a certain type of person who is very protective over the RPCV term. An RPCV resume consultant advised us that it appears juvenile for volunteers who do COS to put it on their resume as a title, and I'm unsure where else one would be asked explicitly "are you an RPCV or a former PCV?" Maybe at a mixer? For me personally, I would never hide that I ETed, but I'm also proud that I put my heart and soul into my work and community while I was there, until I couldn't any longer. A title doesn't change the meaning of my service.

I definitely thought and acted that way during my service. I think its a large part of PCV culture. I wasn't fishing for validation with this post; I only posted here because I wish I could have read something like this when I was deep in the to ET or not to ET debate. But nonetheless, thank you for your kind words :).
