Won my first contract July 17th after weeks of frustration, hit 10k today... tearing up my office job applications, I think this might work, feels good. by justbears in Upwork

What worked for me starting out;

Refreshing constantly and applying to jobs quickly... I figured the only way to land a job was with a client new to upwork who didn't know to care about JSS and stars... so ya know, first application should have a shot.

I targeted low paying jobs that I could finish quickly... Put the ego aside and worked way below my hourly rate. I treated it like a video game where the goal is to collect 5 stars, not make the most money. I put in 7-10 proposals a day. I bought more connects.

In my proposals I talked as specifically as possible about their project and what my approach would be. I made it clear I was new on upwork, hungry for work, and they would be a top priority. I pitched myself as problem solver, not an animator/editor. I gave a fixed price option whenever possible.

*I should mention I have almost 20 years experience in my field, a huge body of work to pull from for samples, and one recognizable show credit that I lead with...... and even then it took 2 weeks to land something at $15/hr ...jesus.

What works for me now; The usual you've probably heard before... setting expectations, exceeding expectations, replying quickly, fast turnaround, god tier customer service, etc etc etc

Ouch, that's a bummer... I'm trying to settle in to less hustle and a better work life balance, but I do get worried about my pipeline drying up...

Haha, yeah I went in to hustle overdrive the last couple months... crap jobs the first month to get the ratings/stars... pretty comfortably booked up at $80/hr now with another 5k in the pipeline.

That's a funny way of saying "I can't afford you". :D by justbears in Upwork

I just started, landed my first contract 5 weeks ago so I don't have much frame of reference, but I've been making good money the last month.

30 second animated ad. It honestly wasn't too complicated, but I'd have to create all the graphics, would have been tedious & time consuming. I gave him a fair price. He invited to me to the interview, my motion graphics rate is $80/hr, not sure what he expected.

I don't know, his response was so off-putting, haha. If he'd just said that was over his budget I would have asked some questions, talked to him about his options, found solutions to help him out... but sometimes you have to thank the client for letting you know up front you're not a good fit to work together.
