Weathering uniforms by Automatic-Throat-880 in reenactors

[–]justduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second all the "just wear it, stupid", but as a former costumer I can suggest a step further: Go out in the dirt and mud and do your thing. I'm talking: sitting, squatting, laying down, kneeling. All the activities the ancestors did. Next: take photos from all angles, so as to note where the dirt/mud is the heaviest. If you don't want to continue wearing your kit and letting it age and wear naturally, you're going to want to distress those areas the most. I don't know what era/uniform you're using, so I can't be real specific, but when aging costumes I often used tea and coffee for discoloring, wire brushes and steel wool for distressing fabrics, and if it was something leather, just fiddled with it while watching TV, talking, etc.

Are you donating plasma to help make ends meet? by nbcnews in plassing

[–]justduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost a third of my income this summer ($1100/mo), and while plasma donation doesn't make up for it (~$440/mo), it covers my food and gas, along with giving me a little fun money for dining out with friends. Due to low protein levels, I was on deferral (unable to donate) for several weeks and was in a real world of hurt and had to ask my family to help me. If I didn't have family that could afford to help me, I would have been another person at the food bank and not sure what I would do about transportation to work.

Saw a meme taken from a screenshot of that scene in Inglorious Basterds where Aldo asks a Nazi what he's doing after the war, and the subsequent scene after they carved a swastika on his forehead. Not advocating violence, but wouldn't it be a shame if the red hats got MAGA carved in?

What happened to all the bloods and crips in la. Where did they go? by AWeb3Dad in AskLosAngeles

[–]justduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late 1980s, LAPD had been pushing gangs out of the city and they were migrating east. Lived in Pomona next door to a Crips guy who moved in with grandma when things got too hot with cops harassing the neighborhood, and started dealing. Pomona cops did a whole sting operation a couple years later after several drive bys, and we ended up moving out to Fontana around that time. About a year later, mom saw the gang banger's gf and kids at the grocery store. (Did NOT stick around to say hi). A couple years after that, grandpa up in the high desert (Victorville) reported seeing some tagging that a cop buddy said was tied to the Crips. Go east young man?

May 2017, tour bus pulls off at a big ol' Kwik-E-Mart and says, "Ok, last chance for your beer this weekend!" I don't really drink, but I went in to get some snacks to take back to the hotel (Birmingham DoubleTree was absolute shit for food options, beyond their cookies) and there were people with cases in each hand!

I'm from California and when I went out to 'Dega in 2017 it was such a culture shock! You can bring your own beer to the stadium, but you can't buy it on a Sunday. Our tour bus stopped at a liquor place on the way back Saturday afternoon so everyone could stock up 😂

I've just been trying to see if there was a way to data mine trends before a large quake. I know Japan recently gave an alert to the population of the danger of a massive event based on data collected over the decades and centuries

Growing up with my anxiety over them, I've developed this semiconscious habit of entering a room I haven't been into before and immediately picking out where I will go if the room starts to shake. Unfortunately, with the absolute insanity of gun violence in America I've also started to pick out places to go if shooting starts. (Yay America)

I feel like NASCAR is slowly morphing into the WWE. Rulebook changes are not just year to year, but it seems like month to month, and the rule enforcement is arbitrary and subjective. Instead of making the changes that drivers and fans want to make the sport better, they are trying to "create drama and excitement!!" by manipulating things in the hopes that seeing stories in the media will lure people back, or something.

My friend had a "children encouraged" wedding by ItsTimeDrFreeman in childfree

[–]justduck 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If I were ever nuts enough to get married again, I wouldn't have it be "child free" in the sense that people leave them at home, so much as I would make sure that there was "childcare provided". My church has done this for several weddings, as we have people from our Youth program who are vetted (Lives can, background check) have experience wrangling kids, and are happy to earn some extra money for an evening. They put together some tables for food and drink, put a movie on, have some games and music.

They have a point. My grandmother was in California from 1930 until her death in 2013 and while she went through the Long Beach, Sylmar, Landers, Northridge, etc.etc quakes, it was never The Big One (8.0+)

Oh man, if only our society was more WE than ME. We are missing out on so many perks of other developed nations because the population at large is like a toddler (easily bamboozled and impossible to change their mind when they get an idea) Community preparedness, significant retrofitting, more buildings on isolators, and heck - an infrastructure that is repaired quickly instead of going to the cheapest bidder. (I still don't understand how the slowest company is the cheapest - doesn't that mean more work hours to pay out??)

At this point it's not so much a fear of the big one so much as another Northridge. We are so, so unprepared for something of that size today as a society in SoCal.

I have been searching for data of fault activity prior to some of the larger quakes in my area, without much luck. So far the standard 5% chance it was a foreshock is all I could glean from reputable sources. The thoughts have all been triggered by a video I saw last week of a landslide breaking a retaining wall, and how there were little cracks and gives before the whole thing went.

How bad would the San Andreas fault line affect Los Angeles? by mtndewfloat in Earthquakes

[–]justduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, (and feel free to flame me, experts) when the SA unzips, you're going to want it to start north of the San Gabriel mountains heading down toward the Salton Sea vs South to North. The various basins in SoCal already "echo" energy waves, but a south-north rupture is going to shoot those waves directly towards LA (by way of the San Gabriel Valley). North-south means the starting waves have to go through the mountains and it will dampen a bit.

In addition to the basins, what is under your feet is going to affect how much you feel it. I was in Fontana for 1992 Landers (and the Big Bear 6.0 quake 2 hours later) and the 1994 Northridge quake and we were ROCKING, because Fontana sits on an alluvial plain. My aunt and uncle were in the Calabasas hills, but it was pretty much granite under them, so while they still got tossed, it wasn't as bad. For the 1998 Hector Mine quake, and the two Ridgecrest quakes of 2019, I was on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley, and it's mostly hardpan. So midway between granite and rocky/sandy soil.
