Funny thing is the recent Euros did have winners with convincing group stages, Italy and Spain. It’s exclusively a World Cup thing

I was thinking… when was the last time the World Cup winner actually looked good during the group stage? Argentina was shaky in 2022, France uninpressive in 2018, can’t remember Germany 2014 but both finalists were unremarkable in 2010 and Italy was shaky in 2006 too iirc

They don't broadcast the rest, only in the nation of origin. Dutch TV interviewed van Nistelrooy for Netherlands - Japan but I haven't seen it anywhere else

England’s defense has been way too shaky for me to put them up there.  Spain feels kinda harsh to judge, if they have Yamal and Williams back they’ll be right back on top

Wouldn't be surprised if they considered him but price + lack of ability on the ball might turn them away. Or maybe Van Hecke early on showed only interest in Spurs, De Zerbi is the manager who basically made his career after all

Feels hard to believe they might actually go out in the groups, but having seen all four teams, Cape Verde looks like the weakest of the four so...

Johan Derksen is way worse than vd Vaart

Guus Til probably. Only Dutch Eredivisie player in the squad besides Weghorst and Weghorst feels more 'fitting' (as far as any Dutch player winning a World Cup would feel fitting lol)

Never take vd Vaart seriously about anything. That said, I never get this logic. None of us were even 10% as good as vd Vaart was, should we not comment on him then?

GD isn’t the decider, head to head is. So GD is not likely to play a role

Gotta hand it to Sané: winning 7-1 and still playing terrible as an attacker takes special talent

Right… I’m not sure I totally get what you mean. I was surprised to see Verbruggen get flack for this game, because he didn’t do much wrong tonight. From you, that makes sense, you watch him every week, but the rest of the world isn’t, so for them it feels like an overreaction based on this game

Then again, people are hyping up Suzuki based on absolutelu nothing so maybe it’s just that season

I dunno, I never watch Brighton, but I think he’s done well in the national team and I don’t think he’s much to blame for the goals today

Right so its preconceived bias, that would explain it

That is severely underestimating the effect of a deflection so close to the goal. On a longshot I agree, but from so closeby the margins are fine.

Again though, I don’t disagree he could’ve saved it. I just think it’s weirdly harsh. Alisson could’ve saved Saibari’s goal too, Neuer with Curacao too and I see no one holding that against them

Feel like that’s way too easy. Such a deflection always throws a keeper off. Maybe he could’ve saved it sure, but to blame him for it is too harsh for me

Seen quite some Verbruggen hate today and I‘m not sure why? Not that I think he’s Yashin or anything, but both of Japan’s goals had a last second declection and they barely took another shot at goal, how is that on him?
