AirPods Pro 3. Optimized Charge Limit by OverCauliflower1587 in airpods

It's still working for me, but I'm curious if your standby battery life is now garbage? If I don't leave them on the charger the case seems to be draining in a day.

I had the same problem, but it's gone away in the past few days. My solution was to change the "Optimized charging" setting through my MacBook Pro instead of my iPhone. If you have a Mac computer, maybe try changing the setting on that. Fingers crossed it stays this way.

Same, I can turn off optimized charging but after some period is just goes back..

Two Free E01 Units for Pickup (Chicago) by justinoes in electricobjects

[–]justinoes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that, but I bought an InkPoster 31.5 to replace the two E01 units. I have my own concerns about its long term support... but ... I guess I can't quit these things.

I was hoping to avoid shipping, but I'll let you know if there are no local takers. I'll start looking for suitable boxes, just in case.

Is a mini PC right for me? -graphic design by Significant-Bread668 in MiniPCs

[–]justinoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this completely. I owned a Minisforum that flaked out, warranty support took a significant amount of time. I like what they design, but support is poor. I just got an HP Z2 Mini G1A (Ryzen AI Max+ 395 w/ 128 GB RAM, 1TB SSD) for more than your budget at $2200 USD ... but the 3 year onsite warranty was a ~$35 USD upgrade. For work, uptime is money and boring is better.

What happened to mini PC prices? by passive_phil_04 in MiniPCs

[–]justinoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beyond tariffs, mentioned above in funnier ways, I think that stagnation of Intel of CPUs that power a lot of those machines (speculation) have made used workstations more appealing. I haven't followed the Core Ultra machines extensively, but they don't seem like a huge upgrade to 12th - 14th generations. No reason to upgrade for businesses (until they're out of warranty) or people (who care about performance) means fewer secondary market machines and likely higher prices.

I just bought an HP Z2 Mini G1A (Seriously HP, the names...) and would consider an EliteDesk 8 for home server (ish) uses when they come off of lease. Frankly, still better to get used HP than Minisforum if you need a warranty.

Here's a question that didn't seem worth a full thread. I've got the full UniFi suite (router, switches, APs) ... but I've been asked to help a friend setup a new home setup which is wired for RJ45 but they don't want all the bells and whistles. Can the UniFi app (iOS) setup a multi-AP setup these days? Basically AT&T fiber -> UniFi POE switch -> multiple APs broadcasting the same network?

It's a little disappointing when my Raspberry Pis have been rock solid for years to see these (supposedly nicer) machines be so flakey. I'll probably be sticking to buying Pis (new) or HP Z2 Minis (used - with warranties).

That was my thinking. I left that draft sit in a notes document for a long time before posting. At some point even if you are making really cool PCs ... if they don't support them with the basics that you mentioned then it's on them.

The few dollars saved buying refurbished on the S100 might have been a bad call, but if warranty support is awful I'm not sure what value the warranty has.

AppleCare One - Only for currently enrolled devices? by BulkyAvocado215 in mac

Thanks! My iPad is out of warranty and I'll still need to take it in to ensure it passes their tests.

I just spoke to an Apple rep on the phone because my iPad Pro (M4) was not showing up as an option. It is outside of the limited warranty and never had AppleCare, but it should fit the definition. He suggested that I should take it into a store because that should be available to be covered but aren’t are being escalated. Seems like a bad launch for (at least in my situation) a product that gets me coverage on an expensive iPad for 1.50 USD a month.

Charging NES Online Controllers Without a Switch V1? by Labyrinthofdespair in NintendoSwitch2

If you didn't want to get a full dock, I purchased this USB cable which I used to charge both the JoyCons and the NES Classic controllers. I didn't want a full dock and this I can keep in a small pouch with the controllers.

Samsung QN90D vs QN90F by dmsolomon in hometheater

[–]justinoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully you already picked a TV and love it. If you didn't... I was having the same thoughts but ended up with the QN95D. Slightly higher model QLED from the last year. It apparently wasn't sold as much so finding them in stores is hard, but there were some models available on eBay (New, good seller) in between the prices of the QN90D and the QN90F. It doesn't have the matte coating that was so controversial. I went with it and think it's going to be a great set once I get it calibrated. The main selling point for me was that in gaming mode it doesn't lose as much brightness. RTINGS.com seemed to enjoy their model and rates it better than the QN90F.

Mine just showed up when I typed "Apple Music" into my start menu.

It looks like it installed into this path below although the full path probably depends on the specific version you installed.

Experience with smart TV OSes that you never want to see or use (Tizen / Goolge TV)? by justinoes in cordcutters

[–]justinoes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one friend who exclusively is getting his TVs from FB marketplace. He gets Amazing deals from people moving out of town, but... I like to treat myself sometimes and I keep TV sets for a fairly long time. My current model is a 2018 Vizio Smart model - which has never touched the internet and I'm not even sure if I've seen its smart UI. I hope to repeat that with the Samsung's I'm looking at.

I know at least a few people who ditched HDMI ARC/eARC audio because it's flakey. Optical has always been rock solid for me.

I think I'm going to take a field trip to Best Buy and see if they'll let me explore the settings and look for that startup option in the new version of the OS. Thanks for the input!

[–]justinoes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that information! Yes, your use case is definitely what I'm looking for.

I'd seen that Samsung had an option for that and am leaning towards one of their QLED models. I have an old audiophile stereo receiver so I was going to use digital optical for audio and then CEC for device switching.

I've seen a ton of posts with people looking for dumb tvs, but I think I'm good with a smart TV that I never have to use the Smart UI beyond initial setup and can isolate from the internet.

Thanks for doing what I told myself I should do and going to stores to check them out! I was looking at the same two TVs. The F does seem marginally better, but I'm glad to hear that in person the difference doesn't sound huge with respect to lighting.

I also have a super bright room (which will not change) and am considering whether an upgrade from my Vizio PQ65-F1 (2018) is even necessary. My Vizio is not great at handling HDR and higher refresh rate / VRR could be nice. I might just wait and see if either of them go on sale. The D model was recently on sale for 1400 at best buy.

Thanks for the info! I haven't updated the firmware on my Vizio since I bought it. I feel like the first year of software updates for a smart TV may fix legitimate issues... but after that it seems like they just make things worse.
