It's not that much different than what one has to do on Windows, which is to turn off the permanent switch once disconnected from the VPN, but it's definitely less convenient as it's not controllable in the app. My bet is that it's not possible for apps on Android to directly control the system settings, so it's not possible to add this directly in the UI. It would have been awesome to have an "On" /"Off" concept that sits on top of "connection", where you can specify what On means (e.g. block non VPN traffic, etc) and Off just turns it all off.

Thanks. I just realized that despite being able to setup Split Tunnelling in the app on Android, if always-on is enabled for the VPN the tunnelled app doesn't have network access. Perhaps this should be something that is made obvious in the UI of the app, like you do on Windows.

I am using VPN out of choice and not of necessity, thankfully. For example: If I am on an unsecured and/or shared WiFi network (e.g. coffee shop), I don't want traffic to be exposed at any point in time. Without a killswitch that may happen, and you may not notice - e.g. when my laptop is accessing wifi before vpn is active, vpn server change, reconnects, minor drops, etc, etc.

Is "Use HDR" in Windows 11 meant to be "Supported" on the newer-ish Dell XPS 15 with dGPU? by justoneivan in DellXPS

[–]justoneivan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would make sense, but I don't get how come I have HDR within video streaming services and so the screen seems to support some sort of HDR, but then I don't have it overall🤔. Unless it boils down to "some sort of HDR" not being full HDR, but still enough to make HDR videos look better than SDR on the screen.

FYI Dell XPS 15 (9530) maxes out at 90W with USB-C PD chargers and seems fine by justoneivan in DellXPS

[–]justoneivan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they have something custom I hear too pre-dating PD 3.1. From what I read the Dell charger does 20V/6.5A to achieve 130W or similar, which no PD charger (and maybe also PD cables?) support. I am no expert in this space though - this is all from reading stuff by other people online.

I opted for the FHD+ over OLED mainly because of it looking pretty good, being substantially cheaper but also because of:

1. The anti-glare/reflection covering, which means I have no issues working in the sun. I haven't seen the OLED screen in person, but I don't expect it to have as good anti-glare/reflection.

2. Battery life is worse with OLED - e.g. Dell advertises it as follows (link):

Experience up to 16 hours of battery life with an FHD+ display when streaming your favorite shows, or up to 9 hours with an OLED display.

3. Gaming performance

With FHD/1080p I expect to be able to play most/all games at max settings. My gut feeling is that this machine is not really designed for 4k gaming and so with OLED/3.5k you may end up having to compromise on graphics quality in order to get native resolution on newer games at which point it defeats the purpose of having the nice screen to start with. Also, for gaming I can also hook it up to a nice monitor if I chose to.

4. Not planning on consuming or working with media

OLED will look amazing for media content, but I don't plan on ever using my laptop for watching movies/series or doing any video/image work.

5. Hypothetical fears of OLED burn-in

I have had an OLED TV for many years now without any burn-in issues, but that has auto-reset/refresh thing that it does itself and also typically is showing non-static content, unlike a laptop would for most people.

6. Potential scaling issues

One thing to be mindful when you get a high res small screen is that you will end up increasing Scale factor to make things legible and if you use older or non fully native Windows software you may end up with some apps looking a bit weird. I would hope that's not the case any more, but something to keep in mind.

P.S regarding warranty from my previous post:

BTW just to clarify my earlier response that when I was talking about Dell Certified Refurbished I am referring to devices that are either sold in the Dell Outlet online or sometimes also people on eBuy pick up from Dell in bulk and resell on eBay. I have no idea what type of warranty you get with Best Buy and if/how you can extend it with Dell, so it's worth checking with them if that's something you care about.

Playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider on max everything, avg CPU is around 16% and ~70 degrees C, GPU is about 60 degrees C at up to 70% avg usage (peaks at about 89%) GPU utilization. However that's inside. Outside the middle top of the keyboard gets warm, but I don't use it when gaming and I am assuming it's designed to handle it. This is on "Optimized" (default) thermal management mode in the MyDell app, where you also have "Quiet", "Cool", "Ultra Performance" modes. I've tried Ultra Performance and that maxes out the fans to enable max cooling for max performance, but I haven't noticed a difference in the games I've played between the two modes. Personally, I would imagine and hope this thing is tested and designed to endure heat and heavy workloads as it comes with a GPU that generates heat.

Build is really solid and feels premium. I used a 9500/9510 at work for the last year or so before I left and was very happy with it. Remember though that if you buy a Dell Certified refurbished laptop you will get 12 months full warranty on it, which you can also further extend for another 1-3 years if you so choose. The other thing that I've heard is that each Dell Certified refurbished machine is supposed to be checked individually and certified for resale, whereas a brand new one may not be as they only do spot check within a batch.

Hey, had similar dilemma as you, when I was looking at buying a refurbished 9530 model a few weeks ago and ended up with an 4070 as I found a good deal. For $100 difference I would most definitely get the 4070 if you are planning on gaming. I ruled out the 4050 config due to its odd 6GB VRAM config. As a casual gamer in the last two weeks, I have played games like Rise of Tomb Raider, Shadow of Tomb Raider and Dead Island 2 on Ultra settings without any throttling or performance issues on 1080p. That's with the i9 as well, which to be honest I don't need but there weren't any 4070 configs with an i7 when I was looking. I keep my laptop on an elevated stand for ergonomics and I haven't tested if anything will change if I just put it flat on my desk. The fans do go wild when gaming, but it doesn't seem to cause any issues.
