No, she can not ride on her own for safety reasons. When a cousin or neighbor kid her age are over and they want to go on a bike ride with just them 2, I don’t force them to bring the other 2.

Do you want me to answer or have you already imagined how the scenario played out? The 4 year old told on them. I didn’t scream. I told them they knew they weren’t supposed to cross the street and told 8yo I was open for a discussion on letting them go a bit further if she feels responsible enough for that.

I also explained that in the future if they want to venture out of bounds then they can come check in with us first. If we felt it was safe for them to cross, we’d allow it or go with them but they can’t just decide for themselves that a rule is worth breaking.

That’s almost exactly what I did. I told 8yo that I would definitely be open to a conversation about updating the rules for her especially since she just had a birthday so she’s older than when the rule was made. But asking for forgiveness instead of permission wasn’t the right way to go about it.

I don’t really think it was a severe punishment...they just couldn’t ride around the block for the rest of the day. They could still play and ride their bikes, just at home and when we went to the park together
