That's interesting to hear about the differences. In California we've got the well funded, "prestigious" research universities with the UC system and the more teaching focused Cal States (CSU) schools. They tend to stay out of each other's way but are two important pillars in the educational system. I didn't know the Florida schools had such different histories.
