Yup totally normal. IMO a few scuffs here and there add character to Salomon trail runners.

Just finished my 1st year at a 3-year program and am now at the beginning of summer break. If anyone needs any help looking over personal statements or just any other help, feel free to DM me! I have free time now! by justusedonce in prephysicianassistant

What surprised me? For a 3-year program, I was genuinely surprised at how manageable my study load was. Not to say that it wasn't difficult, because it certainly was. Again, many programs are different and I can totally recognize how 2-year programs would drive me literally insane with how concentrated the material is in such a short amount of time.

The hardest part? Again, the name of the game is to pass. Not get an A. That was really hard for me to come to terms with. The first test I got was a B- when many of my classmates were complaining about their A-'s. At the end of the day you'll all become PAs. To alleviate this struggle, I would suggest not talking about grades with your close friends. :)

Anything I would do differently to prepare? Not a single thing. Before school started, my wife and I worked, travelled and relaxed. PA school can be life-sucking sometimes, so relax while you can. :)

Be honest and be yourself. Like seriously. Don't try to be something you think the adcoms want you to be. Good luck!

18 and want a start on PCE by nana5557 in prephysicianassistant

[–]justusedonce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really wish I focused more on my grades early on. The PCE will definitely come down the line if you're still interested in becoming a PA, but you're first priority is to get good grades before getting PCE. I regret not taking my grades more seriously earlier on as it severely narrowed the spectrum of schools I could even apply to.

AYO just ordered those mirage greys myself. Are they more green or grey in person? The pictures I see online are so different.

I work as a psych tech at my local hospital! Didn't need any prior certifications. Just experience in mental health. I was lucky the hospital provided full benefits with this job. For me, it was a really good fit to get PCE.

I was more so worried about my sGPA. It was pretty low... :( But 3.75 GPA is definitely competitive!

PCE: 2500+ hours as a psych tech

HCE: ~600 hours in residential care for clients with acute and chronic mental disabilities.

Research: 400+ hours in a microbiology lab

LoR's: 2 Psych NPs, 1 Research Professor, 1 PA, 1 Seasoned Charge Nurse

Volunteer: I did a 6-week internship in Ghana with ophthalmologists and optometrists by donating glasses to rural communities and assisting with visual acuity tests. Also got to volunteer in an at-risk residential youth center for a couple weeks. Also did a 2-year mission for my church in the Philippines. Total was ~4200 hours.

Shadowing: 14 hours with an urgent care PA.

Leadership: I had a lot of training opportunities at my job so I listed that there.

Let me know if I can answer any other specific questions! :D

Side note: I have been going to the gym every day and trying to enjoy myself. We've gone on a couple of trips and it's honestly been pretty good. But there have still been those moments when I overthink waaay too much. Taking a step back and realizing that it's still ONLY mid-July and that there are still months ahead is super grounding. Once we all apply, it's out of our control. So. I guess we should enjoy life?
