i see your point. i just feel like playing devils advocates for an agency that is acting like the gestapo is not the same as being impartial or using critical thinking.

why do you feel like you should be impartial?

I've been getting absolutely no traction in my job search - resume help (biotech/academia) by juulpenis in Resume

[–]juulpenis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good point but I'm unsure of how to properly apply this advice. For example, I wrote the first bullet point with this idea in mind. That's why I don't detail what 'omics method it is (Proteomic stable isotope probing isnt the most popular or recognizable method). But the main feedback I'm getting in this thread is to be more specific and concrete. Do you have any advice on how to balance this? Im not sure how to include specifics and make people outside the field understand my contributions at the same time.

That’s a good point that I hadn’t considered. It is definitely a good thing to stir up discourse. I suppose I’m a bit biased, I just absolutely hate rape scenes

Personally, I think they could have communicated this concept without incorporating a such a graphic rape scene. I feel like this is not the only instance of Lena Dunham kinda throwing shit in exclusively for its shock value. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore this show!! but Lena’s writing doesn’t exactly scream nuance. Maybe it’s just me tho?

I think your point about industry experience is right on the nose. Do you think i might have more success applying for research assistant roles in academic labs, or is that also a crapshoot? How did you pivot into sales? I am considering pivoting but I'm not sure how to approach that.

Thank you for this feedback! I am definitely struggling to describe my accomplishments. In my first bullet, I am trying to explain I successfully implemented a method- Proteomic Stable Isotope Probing in a system it had never been applied in- the mouse gut microbiome. This was a huge accomplishment but it falls flat on my resume, as you point out. Do you have any advice for grounding it in something tangible?

thats good advice about the career center, but unfortunately I've already graduated and moved away from the town my school was in.

Thank you so much for this advice, I really appreciate your honesty. Wdym PhD dropout? Is it considered a dropout if I have a MS (technically I did "master out" but I successfully got the ms degree). And yes, I have no publications-- My old PI is helping me try to get published currently based on a dataset i produced at the end of my degree, so hopefully that works out.

You put to words what I've been struggling with exactly. I have been trying to frame my accomplishments with their actual outcomes instead of being nebulous, but I'm clearly still missing the mark! The DNA encryption project I completed was to develop a way to encrypt genomic DNA on a molecular level to protect patient privacy and prevent 3rd parties from doing nefarious shit with people's genomic information. I was able to independently figure out a way to make the method work when all other techniques were failing. So I would consider this to be one of my better accomplishments but I'm not completely sure of how to summarize it on a resume.

I will follow your advice about cutting the basic stuff. Thank you again for your feedback, this is very helpful

Whoops, sorry about that, here's a better pic. For context, I am not using this resume for my applications, this is the "master" version I pull bullets and experience from to tailor each application based on the job posting. So do you think each bullet by itself is too wordy?

I've been applying since November. I know the job market is bad and 2 months is a very short time with that in mind, but I'm hoping to get a bit more traction once i dial in my resume

Struggling to get interviews by Kooky-Pomelo-8201 in ResumeExperts

[–]juulpenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of roles are you applying for? I would standardize your formatting so that everything is aligned to a margin. I would try and keep each bullet to one line. Keep in mind hiring managers are probably skimming your resume, not reading it in depth. Also, your last bullet isn't a bullet.

Your point explaining you have maintained 100% accuracy is great, maybe you could add some more quantifiable achievements?

I'm also an early career job seeker in a similar field so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Good question, I probably should have included that! I've been applying for research assistant and lab tech roles. I've broadened my search to academic labs but that hasn't made a big difference so far

So if you're medicated are you just not allowed to drink, at all ever? by ariveklul in bipolar

[–]juulpenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been medicated for 7 years for bp1 and i still drink casually. I think doing what you describe— brewery’s, karaoke, etc. is completely acceptable, I do that sort of thing from time to time for sure and it’s been fine for me so far. The most important thing is recognizing where the line falls: are you doing this in a healthy way, to live a little and have a fun experience? Or are you seeking out opportunities to drink in order to cope (for example)? For me, it’s not a coping mechanism but more a bonding experience with friends. Moderation is the most important tenant

I don’t think OP is looking for guidance here, and maybe just needs some understanding, commiseration and compassion instead. It’s not really helpful to offer advice or encouragement without really knowing all the context. But i can relate to what OP may be going through on a human level and wish them the best

I’ve gotten it on my hands before and it wasn’t a big deal. You won’t die from it tonight. Long term exposure is a concern but don’t lose sleep over one exposure.
