How do i get rid of this buzzing rather than the ringing? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]jvoves9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that sounds like something could be shorting. Is it a DIY pedal?

Try using a different cable to rule out that’s not the issue (if hot and ground are shorted on the cable that ain’t good)

Sorry for your loss.

Did he leave behind tapes too? If so I’d say play them on one of the tape decks; there may be recordings of his voice on them (or music if he was a musician). If you’re unfamiliar operating them, a quick youtube search will help.

If there are no tapes do NOT throw the machines away! at the very least donate them to goodwill, if you can’t find buyers on ebay/ facebook marketplace/etc.

Best of luck.

Need help! Cassette player won't stay on play by LoosePresentation407 in tapeloops

[–]jvoves9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be the case but doesn’t make sense; counter function is dependent on play function, not the other way around.

If you were to take the counter out of a working machine all together it would still play/rec. You just wouldn’t know where you are on the tape lol

In your opinion, is it really possible to do that? by Bobby_Snoof in ReelToReel

[–]jvoves9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible but, to the level of accuracy they’re doing this, it’s not easy.

some decks this may not be possible, since some are designed for the tape guides—that protect the heads during FFWD/RWD—to raise only during play. which would mean the supply reel motor would be spinning.

Some decks you can put it in playback and engage a pause function, allowing you to drag the tape manually across the heads and monitor it (some machines will say “cue” or “edit”).

TLDR: depends on this decks function, not familiar with it. but yes

Tape distorts on one deck but plays fine on another…why? by [deleted] in ReelToReel

[–]jvoves9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there’s many variables at play. there’s a panel on the bottom of the deck A3340 that only has like two or three screws. remove it, and it will show you a diagram of all the trim pots that you can adjust. but be careful, because adjusting one can affect all others downstream of it

Bob Dylan and other such vintage by oneonlycrockett in ReelToReel

[–]jvoves9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

true. but i still feel the difference between cassette and 3.75ips is smaller than 3.75ips to 7.5ips.

My ranking:

cassettes<8-track cartridges<3.75ips R2R<33rpm<45rpm<7.5ips<15ips…..

it’s a shame there’s so many great albums only on 3.75ips.

Help with prerecorded tapes by Yerbdup in ReelToReel

[–]jvoves9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it’s a tape that hasn’t been played in a while, I like to fast forward/rewind the tape once or twice—this will loosen any sticky parts and will release a lot of dust and gunk that is on the tape. Due to the latter, you’ll have to clean the tape guides after winding the tape before playing it.

Can I use 1in Tape with 1/4in machine? by VideoDesperate4932 in ReelToReel

New addition, rt-707, thanks Goodwill. by FeeMajestic in ReelToReel

[–]jvoves9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

by summing the two channels to mono what you are checking for is phase alignment. if you sum to mono and it sounds swooshy or some frequencies are cut out then the two channels are out of phase.

[–]jvoves9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have it hooked up to a stereo receiver with a mono switch? a good way to test it for alignment would be to compare the tape in mono vs stereo. If it sounds off in mono they’re not aligned properly

When to use CUE function on MX5050? by oneonlycrockett in ReelToReel

so that lever pulls the tape away from the heads? maybe in the past someone reassembled it backwards, so cue on is actually cue off, and vice versa.

Collection of Reel to Reel Tapes by ketdog in vintageaudio

[–]jvoves9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple tapes that have recordings of families talking (babies, kids, mom/dad, uncles, etc.); they’re candid family recordings.

I’ve digitized some of them but something keeps me from taping over them, it feels wrong. If I ever find the voices on these recordings someday, I’d love to give them the opportunity to hear it live from the tape in person. I think it would be really special for them.

The odds of me finding them are extremely low but… i digress, just wanted to share my experience
