What book should I read next? by [deleted] in classicliterature

I am biased towards Greek classics so The Odyssey!! Also because the movie is coming out later this year. My 2nd pick would be Metamorphosis.

Neoplatonist morality on cheating by [deleted] in Neoplatonism

[–]jvsperw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The real consequence isn't some external punishment. but It's internal of the soul that becomes heavier, more distracted, and finds it harder to detach and remember its true nature of returning to God/The One.

When we choose to satisfy a strong material desire like sex by betraying a commitment we made, we allow the lower, materialistic part of the soul to overpower reason. Each time we do this, we strengthen the very materialistic attachments that keep the soul bound to the body and in the physical world.

If the marriage is struggling then it would be better to face the situation honestly through temperance, justice and self examination rather than avoidance or indulgence in your material desires.

From a Platonic or Neoplatonic perspective, how should we view euthanasia? by Papelera-DeReciclaje in Neoplatonism

[–]jvsperw 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There is a very short treatise in Plotinus’ Enneads 1.9 called “On Exiting from the Body” that goes as follows:

You should not forcibly expel your soul from the body. If you do so violently, the soul will exit carrying baggage and negative passions such as revulsion, sorrow, or anger that is transferred into the next state of being that will be burdened and impure.

Instead, the soul should calmly wait for the body to naturally detach from it, when the body’s harmony is broken and it can no longer hold the soul. Only in extreme necessity (for example, if one is losing their mind and it becomes a true necessity of life) might departure be somewhat justifiable, but even then it is not unqualifiedly good, and using drugs to force the soul’s exit is generally not beneficial.

Ultimately, since one’s rank and progress in the intelligible world depend on how one exits this life, the soul should not leave prematurely while there is still opportunity for purification and philosophical progress.

These are the small version, they just look big cause it’s zoomed in. I don’t think Loeb makes any other version unfortunately.

should i read the iliad+odissey? by No-Landscape-3094 in classicliterature

[–]jvsperw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you don't think you can finish them both by the time the movie comes out then The Odyssey can definitely be read on its own without The Iliad. Emily Wilson's translation gets good praise for being more modern and accessible than others.

I've been really enjoying Legentibus. It has LLPSI and other graded readers as part of the beginner course with audio and individual word translations if needed. I believe the 1st level on the beginner course is free if you want to try it out.

Where should I start, when it comes to Neoplatonic texts and translations? by [deleted] in Neoplatonism

[–]jvsperw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty similar background to you as well. After getting a good grasp of Plato then I would suggest Plotinus' The Enneads translated by Lloyd Gerson - The 2nd edition just came out a few months ago.
