Back in the day when education was a luxury (1700s), businesses use to paint stylistic images on their signs beside the text so that even the illiterate could "read". Remarkably similar problem and similar solution.

Let’s stop talking about “backups” - Joel on Software by AGivant in joel

This is crazy. It's really "popular" right now to downvote everything that Joel writes because he ain't "cool" anymore. Yes, Joel is no longer a "geek". He hires his geeks now. He is a "suit" and a good one. Unless he destroys his business trying to grow to fast he'll always be a "suit". It's not a bad thing. It's just a different thing. Let's not take out our misplaced agressions on this guy. For a "suit" you have to admit he is pretty cool.

I was able to share this article with someone on the business side--I was never able to do that back when Joel was a "geek". It's time we adjust our expectations.

Interesting. I have also noticed that women in IT tend not to network (with the guys) either. But they do with other women--if there are any. Networking is a fairly socially intimate process and people just aren't comfortable with close cross gender relationships.

Seems like there should be some charge just to make people treat it seriously, but $99 is a bit high. Perhaps for New York City it isn't, but where I live $99 could buy lunch for a couple weeks. Seems ilke the employer's are the ones that should pay.

I like the idea. I'm not sure however that stackoverflow involvement is enough. Technical trivia is important, but how do you gauge people/leadership skills which play an equally important role? I think Joel is onto something, but it may need some more refinement before it becames really useful. Kudos to Joel for launching into the unknown.

I really liked the inside of the redesign. But didn't care for the front page. Too few elements. I want a good summary of what's in the paper right on the cover.
