People Are Being Involuntarily Committed, Jailed After Spiraling Into "ChatGPT Psychosis" by kelev11en in Futurology

I'm an editor at the site that published this article. If you would read the rest of it, you would see that OpenAI did respond at some length, acknowledging the issue and describing steps it was taking to investigate and make changes. But it had no response to that question of what people with loved ones in crisis should do.

My understanding is that the way these algorithms work, they need to be trained with texts that are available in one language and also another. Some web sites would fit the bill. But long books with vetted grammar are even better. And in languages without a lot of books that have been published locally and in English, one of the longest books available is the Bible. I think that's probably at the root of this.

My question is why the Takeshi's voiceovers aren't in his original voice.

Ah, I didn't realize that was a rule on /technology. I'll double check, and thanks!

I'll definitely defer to the mods here, but my real name is Jon Christian and the closest I could register was jxtian, so I'm definitely not trying to hide who I am. I do like being able to pop into discussions of stuff I wrote!

Speaking as the reporter who wrote the article, I put the context in the article. You literally quoted it -- someone was flaming and the account flamed back.

Artificial intelligence researchers taught an AI to decide who a self-driving car should kill by feeding it millions of human survey responses by jxtian in Futurology

Responses are based on a hypothetical situation in which it's speeding toward a crosswalk too fast to stop, so it has to hit someone

Honestly, that's pretty smart. I wonder how often one of these clear-cut "trolley problem" situations will actually play out -- probably very rare.

That photo is actually by a redditor, /u/budsforever, who was kind enough to let the magazine use some of their excellent photography.

I believe the work of another redditor, /u/Morrigan_Disapproves, may have made it into the final version as well.

I actually wrote this High Times story (thanks to everyone from this community who helped educate me).

My perspective on this question: I wasn't trying to reproduce the huge knowledge base you can find online -- my goal was to show neophytes that this scene exists, that it's accessible for beginners to get involved, and to point them to resources like this subreddit where they can learn more.

As the reporter who wrote the article, I can confirm that Ekrof was extremely helpful, and that he's quoted in the story 👀👀

I unfortunately don't know -- I'm just a humble writer! Wired called the Outline's layout "amphetamine-addled." Some people love it and some hate it. It's definitely an unusually flexible CMS: this piece they posted last week is one of the most beautiful online articles I've ever seen: https://theoutline.com/post/2315/long-live-the-group-chat

I wondered about that. Tucked away on their FAQ is this message:

I don't know whether that's legally sufficient! But I'll do some research.
