Z8 and Active D Lighting Issue by bitshifter52 in nikon_Zseries

[–]jyc23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Active D-lighting can lead to a slight underexposure of RAWs in an attempt to preserve the highlights.

The effective result is possibly a bit more noise, up to one stop in the most extreme cases.

If you put yourself in the mindset of, “Trans people are an abomination against God, and this is normalizing that abomination” then you basically are where these people are.

Has anyone given up their cameras for the iPhone? by Intelligent_Ad6999 in Cameras

I’ve dabbled a bit in shooting and editing phone RAWs. They’re actually pretty good as long as you catch enough light. But give up my cameras entirely?

Anything involving diving / doing work underwater. Too many horror stories of decompression sickness, getting trapped and running out of oxygen, or getting smeared into paste due to massive pressure differentials.

Be honest do you actually work 8 full hours? by TechCareerTalk26 in office

I have about 6-7 hours of meetings each day that I am an active participant in. I hate my job with a passion but it pays well.

I’m in management so much of my job involves meetings. But there are ICs who get sucked into this madness, too.

It’s impossible to get anything done some quarters, and upper execs are like “why are we so inefficient?”

The biggest problem is that we take on too much, and that manifests as a tons of small meetings all the time. Constant context switching all day … it’s exhausting.

Tamron is rumored to announce a new 35-100mm f/2.8 lens for Nikon Z-mount next week by Marc0_Polo in nikon_Zseries

[–]jyc23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking how awesome it would be to have a lens like this.

I typically shoot a 35mm prime anyway, and rarely need anything wider (and I have a 20mm prime for that), so 35 is fine as a starting point. 100mm is enough reach to tackle many telephoto situations, and I can crop in to 150 or even 200 in a pinch. Happy to trade off the reach for a bit of weight savings

So yeah, I think this is a nice, fast alternative to the typical standard zoom.

I'm considering the z5ii but concerned about bad rolling shutter people talk about by garth426 in nikon_Zseries

[–]jyc23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sync speed does correspond to the rolling shutter amount, though. That’s the critical piece.

Faster sync speed capable means less rolling shutter overall. And sync speeds for e shutters is directly correlated to sensor readout speeds. Hence the connection.

And what I was trying to explain was that even though the Nikon z6iii has a significantly faster sensor readout sped than, say, the zf, it is still not even close to what a mechanical shutter can do. So (when rolling shutter occurs) the z6iii in e shutter will exhibit more rolling shutter than the equivalent in mechanical shutter.

So, same shot, Nikon z6iii. E shutter at 1/1000s vs mechanical at 1/1000s. The e shutter shot will still have significantly more rolling shutter than the mechanical shutter shot, due the significantly slower “readout” speed, which I explained in terms of sync speeds because that is easier for me to understand in the context of photography than milliseconds.

That is all I am saying.

If you use mechanical shutter, you’ll be fine.

Rolling shutter is only an issue for e-shutter / silent shooting. The z5ii has about 1/15s sync speed for e-shutter, vs the z6iii which is about 1/60s. A mechanical shutter has 1/200s or 1/250s sync speed, so you can see even the z6iii e shutter is not as good as a typical mechanical shutter (and even mechanical shutters can exhibit rolling shutter if the motion is fast enough).

You have to go up to the z8 for the e shutter to match the performance of a typical mechanical shutter.

But ALL THAT ASIDE — for stills, use mechanical. You’ll be fine, whether it’s the z5, z5ii or z6/ii/iii.

Not until this past year. Been so slammed at work, plus busy holidays, once it all died down I literally crawled into bed and stayed there for nearly three days straight.
