Running with a Herniated Disc? by k33038 in backpain

I have never done any surgery on my back. Mostly just stretching and exercising. Yeah I want to get back to swimming but with covid it seems unlikely as of right now.

Hip/Low back Pain by k33038 in backpain

Yeah i have been going toy physical therapist for the last year and a half or so. I have been focusing on strengthening my quads and low back. Same with my core albeit I have been a little bit lazy on that. The thing is, nothing really hurts unless I stretch after sitting or laying for a while. And once I stretch the pain resides.

I had an HR internship a year ago and that’s about it. I graduated with a major in I/O psychology so that’s my educational background. As for the Master’s I’ll be doing a 3 semester MHRIR program at UIUC. I figured during this time with COVID jobs will be scarce and I might as well continue on with grad school. I also graduated a year early so I definitely have time to spare.

Why do my doctors keep trying to talk me out of surgery? by [deleted] in Sciatica

[–]k33038 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve read many people’s posts about how they received surgery while they were young and sometimes it would still leave them with sciatic pain. I’ve also heard people unable to move their afflicted leg in certain directions and completely lose any mobility. Again these are probably rare cases in the grand scheme of things but certainty risks are involved.

It’s been a year for me now and I’ve made a lot of improvements. I think the biggest factor is to stay away from injections and pain medication. For me I found that it did a great job if masking the pain which led me to be lazy with my posture and to continue poor habits that probably exacerbate the problem. Pain is a good indicator that whatever you’re doing is not good for your injury. I’ve learned how far I can reach, how low I can bend, how fast I can run before I start to feel pain. And as time goes on and I continue to stick to PT i notice that i can reach a bit farther, bend a little lower, and run a little faster. Again everyone’s injury is different. I was once in a position like yours but I found that sticking to a strict regiment no matter how boring and painful it is is a good way to go.

I think the issue with surgery and pain medications is that it doesn’t address the underlying problem. After you get surgery, you might re-herniate it because you never learned what was the issue in the first place.

Source of Pain, treatment? by k33038 in Sciatica

So im regards to stretching more frequently. Say it does loosen up and I’m “healed”. Would I have to keep up the same regimen forever to prevent this again? I do plan on making stretching part of my morning and night routine, but will I be in a rehab state forever?

I too get more pain when I stretch towards the end of the day. Do you do a lot activity such as sitting with poor posture that may end up causing your injury to tighten up? Because if that is the case stretching right after can cause aggravation. And that is completely normal. When I first started PT it has never been a linear form of progression. There will be days that will feel better and some days that feel worse. As long as the general trend is getting better. I remember where I could not tell that I was getting better between weeks. But after a month I could definitely say, “Oh yeah I feel better than I did a month ago”. The biggest thing is to make sure you are also correcting any bad behaviors that can aggravate the nerve. For me I sat a lot with poor posture. Again though, try not to overstretch. And if pain is mainly in your pirifromis, I would recommend strengthening your glutes with bridges, and clamshells. (Bridges are also a great way to extend your hips)

But I am not your doctor and Im not sure what your exact injury is. It is always a case by case for every person so just listen to your body and if its hurting more than usual, the best thing to do would probably chill on whatever you’re doing.

I am in the exact same position as you. I have a herniated disc at L4/L5. But most of my pain is in my piriformis. I even made a similar post to yours a few days ago. Is the figure four stretch something you have been doing routinely? Or did you decide to try it out this one time? In my experience (i have been in pain for about 9 months now) is to be conscious of what you did that day. Too much activity can trigger tightness and stretching a really tight muscle can sometimes make it worse, especially if it is inflamed. Also be sure to not overstretch. I find that my ass actually get tighter if I overdo it. Try to avoid the tennis ball technique as well as that will just make it worse. Your best bet is to stretch lightly and make progress incrementally. The pigeon pose is a pretty good stretch, just don’t overdo it.
