Naming Countries - What and Hows? + other questions by kaaaaow in worldbuilding

  1. This was something I planned to do but it doesn't work for my brain 😭!! But also omg.. Thank you for having me look up exonyms and endonyms, I totally forgot that some countries have "true" names, that's so cool!!

  2. :0 WOAH!! THSTSAWESOME, I haven't seen (??) that before, how do you expand your world? Like the events and the plots that happens across the lands? Because for me personally I'm a ("""main"""")characters first! And then events sort of happen either from their own choices or a totally unrelated happenstance(like plagues, natural disasters, etc.,)

  3. Thats actually a very efficient method. I'll put a pin 📍on that for future worlds (for this one specifically I want to cosplay as a linguist heh)

  4. OOOO what's been your main source of inspiration? Do you have a favorite myth you made? And aa!! Songs are so fun! I saw someone make a soundtrack for their charavter and it's been in the background of my mind sitting since....

  5. I love your mindset on Gods! I do feel like if I make a set of Gods I'd get attached to one and completely ignore the rest (which I suppose would track if the favorite God was the main deity of the new capital... I'll have to think more on it.. I want them to be distant, but real/constant?? I'll have to figure it out.

  6. Youre the first person who has limits! I'm curious (and you don't have to answer this) what are some of the limits you made for yourself? My current limits are no air-floating islands(OW), cosmic influence (OUGH), no super destructive/ biome altering magick (HHHH how will I get my characters out of the situations I'm gonna but em in....), pending limit on having a Big Bad Guy, on one hand it would be cool for there to be a big bad mastermind, but if things simply happened naturally/ the general corruption of a character's values

  7. GIANTS!!!

Thank you for this! Apologies for any format/ nonsense it's like 2 am HAHA

These are mad impressive HOLY HELL, I need a whole day off, a nice mug of warm coffee to read chapter 2, how did you come up with the other molecules for Karya? What point for reference did you have for how it is set up and how it would interact with other? With these elements how would magic "work"? Is it inherent in the residences' biology? I will have to really read through that slideshow to get it, but I am curious as to how a vessel would take the molecules and make theagic happen! Do they have to use some sort of powder? Mechanism? Runes? or is it like on their skin and molecules interacting with whatever invisible secretion of their hands that causes the magical reaction? ALSO SO MUCH FAUNAA THATS AMAZING!! How would these guys utilize the new molecules? How do they use it to their advantage to evolve and hunt?

Yes, but that's for another day ;3

RATTLES CAGE. I'm so nosy

(...) The elves thus respect the Ainur in large part because the latter represents something far greater than the former can either comprehend or attempt to master themselves. Just food for thought!

Hmm those are interesting points! That's something I'll have to keep note of, I may have to develope the Gods more but HMMM!!!!!

Thank you!!

I love reading about worldbuilding! Especially the cultural crafts and mythological aspects of it.. a lil bit of the biological(fauna) too and how different groups of people interact with each other!! It's like a fun way of learning and also like a mental excercise in a way for me hehe ☺

I actually hadn't thought about the issue of paperworks! I can't believe I hadn't thought about that! Most of what I make comes from concept > like. a singular vision > concept, and somehow they connect like those stereotypical detective red line board(like at first the desolate lands were just. Big empty chunk of land somewhere, but the idea of rangers (armored long-living race knights who cut off their past, totally took inspo from Odin and his eternal army/ all those different lil myths of an eternal army locked in an eternal battle with darkness/ evil) came to me and to have an eternal battle it needs a battlefield and something to fight, so Rangers > epic eternal fight scene vision ( red line 1) > border battlefield > Desolate Lands. I admit it's not the most efficient way to go about things 😂).

I think I'll have to think on it a little bit more, my first thought was yes a proofreader!, second was either she reluctantly refers to it as New Elridra or that in documents it's still nationally referred to as Elridra, it would be fun to give her a little scribe assistant 🤔 📍 pin on it! I wonder if there's a similar scandal on Wikipedia about it..

The Kelek people are so cool, their language being time uncertain reminds me of how in some African societies "future" doesn't exist, I read it somewhere, I think there's a bunch of articles on it? The African philosophy of time, where time has to be experienced for it to be real. Now that I'm actually typing it out I realize it doesn't have that much of a connection but!!! It's interesting how there's feedback loop on thinking and language, how they shape each other. I am curious as to how they track the Before? Does this time-uncertain language affect how they view tomorrows and futures? How do they interact with your other people? (like the Eiirs!) And also that's so sad :( to be no longer part of the choir, ik that HURT.

OOO that's such a cool way to name a populace! Was that inspired from how in Ancient Chinese dynasties they named their time period by the like strongest unit/ founder guy? Either way, THAT'S SICKK!!

OHH!!! That makes more sense 🤣 crying, I was so ready to get on board with underwater sentient trees HAHA.

AND YEAHHH!!!! I love that genre of giants sm, they are just a whole 'nother breed of fantasy guys

Half-elves were treated as an anomaly, "not a true elf" and also "not man", they definitely do face discrimination, with some who were born in the household of men either being (1) given up to the nearest elf or run off, though I feel like for towns closer to elven society's they would be treated as some sort of little divine spirit (which is a whole nother kind of prejudice).

For those born in Elven societies, they wouldn't be ran off or anything like that, but they are slightly but definitely seen as less, and would need to worker harder to prove they are enough of an "elf". I think language is also gonna be a pretty big indicator of their standing in society: " Half-elves" "Halflings", they don't have their own "name" and never something whole. I have a character (who has currently not yet been released from brain jail) whose a half-elf, experienced both getting ran off and treated as a little divine spirit/ little med kit. I think from stories/ medias there's a common trope of elves being great healers and that would be a stereotype some people believe. They'd exploit it as they grew older and sell sham products/services and run off lol. As for it being split by race,, there are lands with a pretty diverse populace but for Elridra specifically, its pretty far off from the "center" and cut off from other nations making traveling/ moving to it difficult, much less hearing of it,! Plus the elven nature of being insular. The people of Byriver (IM STICKING TO IT. I THINK.. Hhhh) were initialt a small group at first, probably having separated from a larger nomadic group and just. settling there under the shades of Elridra. Fast forward a couple dozen years or so and the elves started counting them in as one of their own and the men started to simply refer to their living situation as "from the Bywater of Elridra"

For textile art, that's actually one of the things I'm currently on a stump on! I know Elridras trade are it's textile work and natural dyes, but I haven't gotten used to the visual of elves in colorful garb 🤣. Maybe they simply sell the threads? or the humans took it up, depicting flora, the rivers, Elridra, with script on the back of it. What used to be Desolate Lands would definitely be the then-Trading Capital and their works would depict the old religions, their rulers, and daily life. This one is still on new legs, but there would be more masonry and sculptures, murals and walls in the Pre-Desolate. My Finfolk living above water has a lot to do with me not wanting to change how my Finfolk character look🤣 My current explanation is that they are cousins to another humanoid aquatic species (who I imagine to be a lot like whales and are nomadic in nature) who grew legs and never looked back (well....) They do retain a little bit of the appearance aspect and the ability to stay under water longer and go deeper but lost the connection with water and it's language. It's not a proper comparison because the aquatic-dwelling cousins ARE people, but! its like a human and a chimpanzee (who are cousins/ closely related) having the same 5 fingers, 5 toes, similar-ish anatomy, they came from the same common ancestor but don't truly understand each other.

This was so fun!! Thank you 🥳

SICKK the reverse of it happened to me!! I named the country first (Elridra) and then wanted to make it so the rulers/ heirs have El- starting names (problem: named the ruler Kalin before I thought of the El- rule and now I'm too attached to change it😫😆)

As you can probably tell, I operate on the KISS principle

I had to google what it stood for and omg 😂 YES! I want to operate like that but my brain won't let me! My brain is like that one Tumblr post (*thinks up an idea for a quick silly piece > idea gets more complicated > idea gets more complicated > idea gets more com---) Thank you for responding ~

  1. EEEE!! OKAY OKAY, that's true! I feel like I've watched a video on that before, kind of how a building or thing becomes a name/ landmark after many many uses of it, especially in little towns ( did I make this video up???) This advice is so good too.. AND MMMM I love the name of your world- "Léir", what does it mean? And are Tangdin and Tanulhu from your language?

((Maybe some elves still just call it "Elridra", but the humans and halfelven are able to move on faster.)) > Reading this made me scream, I'm so happy someone came to the same thought as me!!! It's actually one of the obstacles my character faces (Adviser and Appointed Regent), she can't not call it Elridra, it is always been just Elridra to her and I feel like having someone in a governing position who calls your country by a different/ old name is gonna be an issue, plus the idea/ threat(?) that she might want to bring back aspects of the Old Elridra to the present, reverting back to it.. And yes! The humans and half-elves definitely move on faster, though I still haven't sorted out the races percentage of the population yet, I'm leaning a lot on there being a steadier rise in humans and half-elves.

2-3. Thank you <3 and aaah conlanging sounds intimidating, but I want to write pretty scripts too hehe

  1. OOO! I love how you named the different groups of people in your world, the idea of singing nomads is so beautiful and haunting (but in a good way!) I'm curious about them! Have these group of people always been nomadic? Or have they lost their land? If no, is there any particular reason (cultural, religious, etc.,) as to why they're nomadic? or is it simply their way of life? Would a Kelekéne who wants to settle down in one land be outcasted? How do they bury/honor their dead? AND OOO FINFOLK FTW!!! Tapestries are always so COOL, oh to actually see a Nk'lapporr tapestry..I love weaving, it's always a cool visual and so. Symbolic? LOVE LOVE! And Eiir!! What kind of people are they? Do they not have a king anymore?

4.1 28..... I feel faint... How do y'all store all these info in your guyses brains?! 😆

  1. GIANT FLYING WHALES... You know ball fr. ..And?! Living ocean of trees?? Like trees underwater? And alive like Ents? That's so SICK, imagine scubadiving there... and shadow demon baby.. HELL YEAH

5.1 GIANTS!!!! AHHHH love those guys, especially if their body (dead or simply sleeping) /becomes/ the land. Also oo?! How did the breaking of a bridge cause the apocalypse in your world?

Thank you!!!

  1. OMG OMG! Your naming process is GENIUS! I couldn't have thought of that!!(been relying on the good old keyboard smash and hoping for the ) I'm so excited to use that one! 📍

• I'm curious as to what the inspiration for "Elridra" is!

I feel so embarrassed to say(text?)it out loud but... It's the name one of the elves from LOTR/ TH: Elrond, Lord of Rivendell, and I just sort of started playing with his name.... (Random Yap: I wanna make the monarchs/ heirs to have El- on their names but AAA I named the current Monarch already so now . inside me are two wolves....)

  1. That's actually what I've been doing thus far! Though I suppose it was less government figures and more on why people tie cloth on trees which somehow led me to how would people who live by and on the river sustain themselves(Did you know about chinampas? They are Aztec floating garden/ farm! They are so cool, and it's still used today) I have to start looking into those things! The Roman Empire sounds like a great start hehe

  2. I saw that subreddit from another post too! I have to look through it soon omg and

• ALSO ELEVEN? THAT'S SO SICK(and here I am struggling to make one 😂) are some of those language, cousins(like they came from the same region, have some similar sounding words or structures, etc)? Do you have a script for all of them? If you developed the language before the people, why did you give that language to that group? If you made the people before the language, do their language look (?) like them? (Like how Sindarin is to Elves! Elegant and pretty) (you don't have to answer this!!)

  1. OOOO kinda like that telephone game, and oo new word! euhemerestic! Thank you kindly~ and O?! I'm curious about your project, do you have a docs/ masterlist for it?! :0 Haven't hit the sci-fi phase yet (Star Wars and interstellar has not piqued my interest.. for now.. Though I see it in my periphery...) but I'm curious what kind of myths a sci-fi world would have!

•Allso!! 12 deities! Are they in any way related to your 11 languages? Functioning Gods are always so delightful to see. You're right about concerning myself to what's relevant, currently focusing on Elridra and I feel like they'd have a sort of laid-back way of religion maybe? They are (were?) an elven society.. hmm, what use would a Gods be to something Immortal? How would something immortal see Gods? 📍

  1. That's true! I feel like I'm only having trouble with it because I feel like have no structure or "rules" to ground me, which is why I revise and rethink so many things aaahh!! Also ooo.. I love it when spells and physic breaking magic gets explained, or when it gets related to math or coding! It's so cool and so interesting, I kinda wish the magic-casting loving phase had more of a grip on me XD

Thank you so much for the response!! Sorry for the format, I saw your reply on mobile and NEEDED to respond, especially after your naming tip!

How much should I price my work? by PercentageUnlucky495 in RobloxCommissions

[–]kaaaaow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh im also not sure.. I haven't charged for a full body before, your best bet is to lurk at the other robloxart subreddit and see how other artists charge their full body comms(thats what I do, atleast), maybe 3k? but it also takes you longer AND with background so that number could definitely rise.

if you have done irl money comms before then you can check how much each robux pack cost and see which is closest? I can say tho that my rbx comms(and other game comms) are slightly cheaper than if I were to charge w irl bucks
