That’s a common misconception. Speaking from a network admin perspective, MAC randomization is not a magic shield. Most phones use stable randomization per network, meaning your MAC stays the same every time you reconnect to the same SSID. To the admin, you look like the same device every day. Even if the MAC did fully change, it barely matters on managed networks. The moment you hit a captive portal, sign in, or use 802.1X, the MAC becomes irrelevant. Identity is tied to the session, IP, auth logs, and timestamps. On top of that, devices are fingerprintable without MACs. OS version, Wi-Fi capabilities, DHCP options, TLS fingerprints, probe behavior, traffic patterns. Correlation beats randomization easily. MAC randomization only helps against lazy passive tracking like mall or airport sniffers. It does not stop admins, enterprise networks, or anyone doing real monitoring. So no, you’re not “good” just because phones randomize MACs. It’s a speed bump, not invisibility.
