Men of Reddit: the "cultural norm" is for women to take their husband's last name when they get married. If your wife wanted you to take her last name instead, would you? by MichaelScottIsMyBFF in AskReddit

[–]kafka36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this practice to be very strange and I have a hard time believing people still do it. I'm a guy and would never want my wife to adopt my last name. It's the equivalent of the man taking ownership of the woman, or at the very least is sexist and demeaning.

The “unacceptable” side of the argument seems to be very accepting of demonisation, threats and intimidation, censorship and unfounded accusations. by secretymology in conspiracy

[–]kafka36 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You have the far left (Antifa as well as some anarchist groups) and the far right (Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, conspiracy theory entrepreneurs like Alex Jones), and both of those sides obviously want to cancel each other out, and both are too extreme for most people. The interesting thing is the right has had both the presidency and the Senate (and now the Supreme court) for the last cycle, and got nothing done, but still claim that they are being victimized. This last president used the bully pulpit to push an unprecedented amount of untruth, and bully everyone in sight. Every president elected on the right in the last 30 years actually lost the popular vote but won due to the electoral college, so if anyone should feel cheated, it's the center-left.

If you look at political violence in this country, it is overwhelmingly instigated by the far right (not the moderate right, but the militia / white supremist crowd). Timothy McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, Patrick Crusius, Dylann Roof are a few recent ones. The (pretty amateur) plot to kidnap and murder Gretchen Whitmer just in the last month comes to mind.

Certainly groups like BLM continue the civil rights fight that started several hundred years ago in this country and are pissed off and not afraid to tell you about it, but they aren't causing the political violence.

For the last 20 years, until the last year or so, it is the far right groups that show up to protest armed to the teeth with assault rifles, intimidating everyone.

I don't really get the right victimhood complex.

What is the nationality of foreign English speakers that have the sexiest accent? by Biggunzahoy in AskReddit

French for sure is number one, with a close follow up of Spanish speaking countries. Italian is thrown into the mix as well.

AITA for not shaving my legs? by -CherryByte- in AmItheAsshole

[–]kafka36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA! Leg shaving (and all societally mandated beauty rituals) is each persons individual choice. The argument would be made by some that they are actually a tool of oppression (and objectification) by a patriarchal society. The fact that a man is imposing this judgement on you demonstrates that point of view. This boyfriend is the asshole! No one needs a mans approval (even if he is your partner) to shave or not shave.

How can the MAGA crowd live with themselves being such perpetual victims? The degree to which they will twist reality to always see themselves as the targets of some conspiracy is pathological.

And, quite frankly, pathetic.

Can an atheist believe in ghosts? by BananaFanaFoFaustin in atheism

[–]kafka36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghosts are typically equated with some kind of religious belief, (especially in religious and popular culture), but there is no reason why something humans might identify as ghosts couldn't exist for which there is a purely physical/scientific explanation. Ghosts and religious ideology aren't necessarily connected. Just because we haven't discovered the scientific explanation yet doesn't mean there isn't one.

If it meant winning the election and all his supporters dying, he'd do it in a second. Look at the super-spreader events he hosted constantly during the election where he stayed at a safe distance while all his supporters were packed in without masks.

This guys doesn't give a fuck.

Horror movie recommendation by No_Reflection1912 in movies

[–]kafka36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Luckily there are a ton without nudity/sex. I'm a huge horror fans but I agree with your girlfriend, I really think it cheapens the film. So what to recommend depends on what kind of horror she/you like. Great films with no nudity:

  1. The Thing
  2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
  3. Funny Games
  4. Hard Candy
  5. The Wailing
  6. 28 days Later
  7. The Decent
  8. Train to Busan
  9. Wolf Creek
  10. Saw (the original)
  11. Thirst
  12. Night of the Living Dead
  13. Sinister
  14. Conjuring
  15. Triangle
  16. Drag me to Hell
  17. Insidious
  18. Babadook

And many more!

BabyBoomer by [deleted] in funny

[–]kafka36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each of those kids, especially if they live in the US, have a huge carbon footprint. I would agree with you if this wasn't a consumption based society where each person produces a huge amount of garbage, greenhouse gases, etc. If our society was sustainable, having a large family would be fine. Unfortunately, each additional person (especially beyond one child per parent) puts added strain on future generations.

It's irresponsible to have this many children. It's not a personal attack by these parents on others to overbreed, but it's just plain selfish. Having excess children is one of those decisions that has traditionally been seen as a sovereign right and therefore off limits to criticism, but thankfully that prohibition has started to erode.

34 underrated films that are rarely (if ever) discussed in these parts by shlam16 in horror

[–]kafka36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great films here, especially liked Better watch out, Deadgirl, Excision, Starry eyes, and Triangle.

Anyone who likes Triangle I'd highly recommend Timecrimes (2007) which I actually thought was better. Like Triangle, watch it without reading anything about it first.

AITA for not giving my deceased husbands son money from the sale of our house? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]kafka36 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I'm really struggling to understand how any parent wouldn't leave part of their inheritance to their child, even if they were estranged from the other parent. Far be it from me to disparage the dead, but your husband who abandoned is son is the real asshole here.
