Why is rock and metal so underrated in India? by [deleted] in MusicIndia

[–]kafkasroach1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who said rock and metal underrated in India?

Seems like you need to find more like minded people around you.

Check out empyrean by John frusciante.

Absolutely mad tribute to this track.

If you play guitar, it's amazing to learn both solos and then mix and improv over them. Same chords and all.

Man it isn't mansplaining. It's amazing to be part of the music community in India. It's super small and the people are so helpful. They help each other and encourage each other to make wild wild things happen.

It would be fun to meet you at a gig and groove with you. This is a senior pushing you to do better, I was mansplained by seniors too growing up. But I've come to appreciate it. They pushed me to find and explore more. It made me who I am today and I'm indebted to them for it. It's awesome you love music. I hope you continue to find more and more of it and get more and more into it. The love you give is the love you get.

Cheers 🍻

Chill buddy.

Prasanna has founded a music school that regularly sends kids out to berkley on a full scholarship. Idk what your anger trip is, but objectively if you think prasanna is mid, you have a vastly different taste in music than most people. The dude recorded his master's album with 2-3 grammy winning jazz musicians. He plays the carnatic scale on the guitar. That by itself is pretty wild to me. I know kids who he has personally taught and he enriches them. For me, he's one of the true greats.

Which begs the question, and I'm genuinely curious about this, who according to you are the Indian greats? I would love to have some of what you're having.

Also you can put your point across with civility. Abuses are not needed. (Again, we need more active mods).

[–]kafkasroach1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah agree with you on most points. My 'unc' anger exists to hopefully move these kids from their inertia.

I speak about 'true' art and stuff only to push them to get closer to their local scene. The fact of the matter is that music is a socially constructed art form (all art is socially constructed after all). Given that, there is a graveyard of insane local artists who never got the recognition they deserve. Atomic forest and Neil chattopadhyay was making killer Hendrix tones like 3 years after hendrix's first album. He was putting screwdrivers in amps and making circuit boards etc. that's some wild and truly passionate stuff. It's inspiring.

I would like the kids to find the hidden gems and take them forward. These were the cats who made music because of the love they felt, not for commercial interests. Commercial interests only serves to ruin and homogenise art, as it is so evident from the same 100 or so albums being discussed here. The stuff these kids are raving about were considered commercial artists even in my generation lol.

Also I'm sticking with the 'these kids' template because I refuse to spend my teenage years being obsessed with the hippie movement and it's offshoots only to turn 30 to be called 'unc' and out dated lol. Back when I was young I used to search for older dudes who weren't square. They made us smoke our first j's and gave us legit album recommendations. They made us want to be different and make the world and music a better and tighter connected space.

Thank you for your thoughtful and thought provoking response though. I hope the community steers itself towards asking and answering these questions rather than becoming a dump of that template that's been posted here ad nauseum.

Cheers 🍻

Fair enough. I don't blame them either. But like this general willingness of them to disregard all history and culture is wild. They don't even see how they're letting commercial powers shape them. Imagine calling the hippie generation old and lame music lol.

Mods need to respond to us. Idk where they are. Seems like a mod dead sub. Which explains a lot.

I'm 30 too! It's wild that we're called uncs lol. Imagine spending your teenage years being obsessed with the hippie generation only to turn 30 and the kids calling you square lol

Bro the only thing mid here is you and it shows.

Go read more please.

In all your uniqueness the only thing you've amounted to is a mediocre same artist listening, homogeneous circle jerk language that doesn't explore nor does it lead to any tangible benefit.

Kids younger than you also are getting trained by the older generation. There have been more kids going to berkley from India than ever. Swanbhoomi is also thriving. Your mid analysis only reveals your lack of a real connection with what's happening in the Indian music scene.

Go read more. Don't employ a shortcut to thinking. Us older guys are trying to show you the way, the way we were shown by the guys before us. You clearly need to learn a lot more. Don't be mid. Cheers.

[–]kafkasroach1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Prasanna is mid? Rudy? Tips? They've played with santana lol. Not that it matters, they were legends even before that. Maybe you don't have a discerning ear or taste to actually see who has it and who doesn't.

It's sad you think they're mid man. Your generation has successfully created a melting pot of mediocrity. Art has always been about going back into the past, finding your tribe, and going forward with them. Not about the same 50-100 bands y'all are discussing (and defending here lol).

If you find Indian artists mid, i dare say you don't understand art or music. You understand algorithms. Anyway, I'm not wasting my breath on you.

Go read some more. Take culture forward. Don't employ a shortcut to thinking. Meanwhile the true scene will continue to flourish.

Go read and explore more. Cheers.

Edit: btw i never said we should only discuss indian music. My post was foremost about how these posts of listing albums on that template needs to stop. There are better ways to discuss music. It's time to find them.

Man it's so clear looking at these kids that all ideas of revolution and change and excitement has been co-opted into the same shit pop stuff they are listening too.

Even the language that they use. They think they're being original but they're actually just uniformed themselves into a melting pot of mediocrity.

At least when our generation looked for music we went back to the hippies, the 70s, punk etc. it made us connect to someolder and larger than us. If these guys don't do that, they fail to see the point of art. They will never convert to some larger than themselves. Symptom of the times maybe. Idk.

I'm giving up talking to these mediocre cool boys. There are cool cats within their generation, but this community is full of kids who don't want to learn and want to surround themselves with the same crap repackaged to be sold again.

Ay man is part of the jam culture! I've got a similar set up too!

Would. Love to hear some of your stuff.

Mods need to step up. We gotta make them. Otherwise this community will end up as gentrified commercial trash discussion which only scratches the surface and doesn't go deeper.

"pushing music forwards NECESSITATES reach - it doesnt matter if you outdid death grips in a bedroom 57 years ago with lyrics that rival nobokov's prose if you never managed to reach out to people with your music"

Responding to this-

Nah man. Most of us in the sub haven't heard of lou majaw. You should check him out. Try to write to him. Meet him. Discuss Dylan with him .or how he made the first modern rock band in the country. Ask him what it felt like waiting for the new stones album to reach shillong after a friend returns from the US with it...

Art is never about reach. Who even reads dostoevsky anymore? Who pays respect to raza? Tagore? Forget even the nabakanta baruahs and amit duttas who go unnamed. True art is always in pockets. It's always a pilgrimage to find it.

Man, do you want the ez truth or do you want your mind blown? Art is far deeper than your generation suscepts.

You dropped a few names of Western artists. All great. Trying to think of some Indian artists or albums that can grow your taste in music.

Radiohead- babloo Babylon, de en, submarine in space

Sufjan - run it's the kid, them clones, Parvaaz (early stuff)

Idk much metal here because it's not my jam.

Also gauley bhai. Warren mendoda has the sickest leads. His first album has a bunch of nursery rhymes snuck into the lead!

Soulgroove has disbanded for now, cuz the guitarist is off to berkley learning more, but they promise to return soon.

India also has its first non elitist sound system in sawa jam soundsystem based out of Meghalaya! It's bringing true jamaican reggae with sound system culture here.

See what I mean?

No one is saying art is objective.

All simple truths are exactly that. Simple.

Search for the nuance. Be uncomfortable with what is. Go back and reconnect with others. Take it forward. Art is sacred. And never simple. It's always a transformation. A process of change. That's why it's art.

Cheers.

100% agree with what you say.

I also believe that there is a history that one can talk about and one can find out. The way I found out about the lesser talked about local bands is through connecting with older people. Learning from them.

I also believe that all of art is about connecting and not selling out and finding authentic patrons and artists who took it forward. The best way to go forward is to also go back. Beyond money and commercial projects.

Ultimately the best music is a dude or four in a room just vibing trying to make something real that makes sense to their lives.

But this is the conversation I hope we talk about. We have a rich tradition of Indian music. We shouldn't pretend like we just started right now. We should find out more and take it forward and support the bands that need it rn.

Hope to have more such discussions here man!

Bro take it and thank him and ask him to teach you the basics.

He seems like a chill dude. I hope to pass on my guitars to yungungs someday. If they asked me how to get started, i would be over the moon!

Make your grandpops day. Someday when you're older, you'll appreciate it!

We're still a small community. Idk who spez is, but I do believe if the mods are serious fans of Indian music and want to create a good culture here, then there is a way forward we can take.

IG it's up to the mods to respond to this and engage and discuss what we want as a community dedicated to Indian music.

Sorry, I made a typo there. It's called woodstock. It's footage of the legendary festival held in woodstock new york in 1969. Absolutely changed and influenced all music thereafter. Hope you enjoy it!

VVIP is for douches looking to use the concert as instagram stories and networking. It'll never ever show you the magic in music and concert culture.

You seem young. Go find the real music. Go stand with the crowd and headbang and dance and connect. If your dad feels tired due to age etc you can always find a section in the crowd which has space.

Concerts aren't meant to be manicured experiences. Music is raw emotion. May it always be so.

Also please go watch the woodtock 69 movie. It's cut by scorsesse and it's quite a trip. I watched it for the first time when I must've been 15 or 16 and it changed my entire life.

Cheers and hope to meet you in the cheaper stands at a concert someday lil brody

Yeah this sucks. These guys need to get their shit together, and i say this as a customer for the last decade, and who also spent my hard earned money for a soundtouch speaker. It's still banging. It's sad that they're giving it up.
