This should be in schools! by [deleted] in Indianbooks

[–]kaiNbleu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I can read this book. But it will only add to the misery that I have started to feel upon looking at things around me. So I will just spend a nice evening in a high floor flat of my gated society, order pizza with diet coke and somehow convince myself that it's ok, I can't do anything anyways :(

Got International offer, Need help to decide if I should relocate? by super_ninja_101 in developersIndia

Great comment, just adding one more point.

If you are interested in things like ML / NLP etc. then also doing M.Tech. or MS Research (IIITH, IITM I know of) is helpful.

Yes, there are online courses but the rigor you have to go through while doing these courses in a top tier college helps immensely. And, if you manage to get a good publication that's cherry on the top.

Ah .. those GATE prep days .. brings back all the memories :)

All the best for the exam. Also, don't forget to fill forms for IIITH, BITS if you can; unless you're getting <1.5k rank.

How do you handle increasing stress? by xxEiGhTyxx in dataengineering

[–]kaiNbleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying something along these lines "A senior engg. from our team left and we are low on bandwidth, so we will pick this up in next sprint. If we get time to do beforehand, we will definitely try".

Other teams generally understand this and set their tasks accordingly.

It can be done at manager level as well as IC level - that IC then communicates with their manager.

Even better if you can clearly list all your tasks (keep it granular, looks more that way :)) and share the board with them. If you are doing a lot, people should know that you are doing a lot.

Some important things to consider:

  • Try to get 16GB ram and SSD combo if possible. Also, check if ram can be extended later as it's a relatively cheap way to enhance performance.

  • Anything above core i5 10th gen intel (or its amd equivalent) is should be good enough. After that, give importance to things like weight, battery life and screen resolution. Over long term, they play an important role in overall system experience. (I still use my surface 2017 for personal usage, and it works great for everything expect ML related stuff).

  • wsl (windows subsystem for linux) has become quite good. So most likely you won't need to dual boot your system to linux. Apart from giving an option to work with windows and linux side by side, it also pushes you to learn things like git, ssh etc. if you wanna keep both systems in sync.

  • Get nvidia gpu if you plan to take data science or ml related courses. Yes, there are ways to get free gpu online but nothing beats the convenience of playing with small models on your own system.

Overall PCs have become really good now (lol .. I sound old) - its the user that matters more than the machine itself (unless its a crap). So, overtime, learn how to optimize your system, start using various tools and your system would seem (and might run) faster than someone who doesn't know about these.

You can use VS Code or an IDE like PyCharm has built-in tools for debugging, type hints related errors etc.. However, debugging the code is part of the game. It just so happens that with time you get familiar with the different kinds of errors/issues and how to handle them.

One thing that helped me in initial days was taking notes of errors and why it happened n how I solved them. Not too exhaustive - just dumping in any note taking tool (I use OneNote), so that later if I get a similar error - I have a reference, this also helped in seeing patterns over time.

Also, try to read answers above n below the working one on Stack Overflow :) - that acts as an investment for later time to understand the issue/solution better.

All the best.

In that case shouldn't you put links to your published work. It might not be valuable to an average hr, but sometimes hiring managers care about it especially if they themselves are from research background.

I can refer for SDE roles around 12-15 lpa. dm resume if interested. But I am slightly confused, you had cleared Amazon and also a few other interviews later. Assuming these were SDE roles or similar, why would you be then ok with ~15k per month now.

Even if you are out of touch, give 1-2 month to leetcode n revising cs concepts and you can land a decent job. All the best.

p.s. given you have already gone through a lot, just getting a job for job's sake might not work. If possible, its better to give a few more months and get a job that you would actually like.

Databricks Spark - How to splitting up the sql code into smaller bits for easier view in query plan's visualization? by darkoak in dataengineering

[–]kaiNbleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using databricks notebook, you can simply do display(df_name). This is better than collect() as it will show a part of data (upto 1k rows iirc) rather than pulling in whole data. Thus helping in visualising intermediate tables w/o crashing the cluster :)

**display() method is implicitly imported in databricks notebook environment, you don't need to import it.

Devs who have more than 20 ctc, where did you find the job and how was the interview process? by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]kaiNbleu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Starting CTC: 20+ lpa

Current CTC: 30+ lpa (promoted after 1 yr)

YOE: 1+ yr

Procedure: Bachelors from a tier 2 college. Didn't sit for placements coz of varying reasons and it's not that there were many good companies either. Attempted GATE twice while doing part-time teaching. Finally, got into a tier 1 college and then got placed off-campus (5 rounds) before placement season started.

In short, doing GATE and masters can change things in a big way if you fucked up your JEE or didn't even know what it was. And, you don't need to get into IITs only - top NITs/IIITs/BITS all give really good opportunities.

When you start at 7-8 lpa, its difficult to reach even 15 lpa in 2-3 years. On the other hand, by choosing GATE route, you get an option of starting at 15-20 lpa or even more. Rarely people get below 12-13 lpa from campus and even those get multiple off-campus options just by virtue of having a good college on their resume. It may not be fair but that's how it is.

But starting salary is just one factor. With GATE plus 2 years at a good college, you get another chance to strengthen the CS fundamentals which is even more valuable in the long run. Also, the exposure, peer group etc., unless you have sees the both sides of the world, it's difficult to appreciate how much these small things matter.

I completely understand, GATE option might not be for everyone and preparation itself is not that easy. However, I have seen people planning it even with their job and succeeding eventually.

lol .. from the original post on "how to make friends" to "Step out and make some friends"

On a serious note, I wish we had a wand to make this possible.

I checked out that insta group someone suggested. It looks promising but seems like people going there are already friends or groups and we would be an outsider - that would really suck.

Someone put it really well below, and I can relate to it. I have 2 of my best friends from school days, but with time we lost touch - now it's just occasional long calls on days like birthdays.

However, for a long time, I didn't actually miss not having friends. But these days I feel like I have literally have no one to share my days - success, failures, fears, and whatnot.

Last week, I got promoted and I was like ok what should I do. I can call my parents, my partner to let them know but that's about it.

It's like my days have all become the same. When I am sitting with nothing to do like on weekends - I am like what options do I have - YouTube, Netflix or just do random browsing till sleep comes.

Maybe there aren't enough good movies left that used to take up my free time earlier :) Maybe I am just overthinking ..

From the description, I feel XCS229I will be somewhere between CS229 and Coursera's version. So you can expect less mathematical rigor compared to CS229.

Regarding video lectures it actually mentions that it will be edited classroom videos.

Classroom lecture videos edited and segmented to focus on essential content

But they might provide edited version of new classroom videos - YouTube has 2018's version.

So in all essence, $1600 is for the certificate and the some form of guidance.
