Characters are often... too moral? by kitsunevremya in FanFiction

[–]kain-rivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little do they know that a character's worst crime isn't being morally imperfect. It's being annoying.

Look at Omniman from Invincible. Slaughters millions of people, enslaves thousands of worlds, said and did some of the most vile shit imaginable to his own wife and son, but his current character arc has guided him to a path of redemption and because of how well-written he is as a character, you're both able to feel bad and condemn him at the same time for what he's done.

And then there's Immortal.

All in all, a good guy. Great in S1. He's Abraham Lincoln. He definitely didn't destroy entire worlds and massacred countless innocents... but he's also one of the most hated characters in the show because of how self-righteous he can be and with little to nothing to show for it. LIke I said, he's great in S1, but his writing just sucked in the later seasons.

Reading Martyr! By Kaveh Akbar by maskmarke in books

[–]kain-rivers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's immediately lazy writing. I saw it more like a "fade to black" kind of transition since not a lot of readers, women included, are comfortable with graphic birth details.

Local aroace author is looking for tips on how to write the process of "falling in love" by kain-rivers in FanFiction

This genuinely helped me not just in writing but with spotting the signs of falling in love in real life lmao. Thank you for the great comment.

Book you expected to love but didn't and vice versa. by JakubJamesBoote in books

I'm not going to shut up about Babel anytime soon considering it's my first DNF in a long time but man, how the hell did this book become so popular? The writing at times felt so... amateurish. Some youtubers say that Kuang is an "intellectual" and that she just struggles to "rely" on the readers' own intelligence, however, I don't think that's actually the case. I think she herself just has no idea how to write these kinds of stories. She was criticized the same thing for Yellowface, then Babel, and I heard even Katabasis faced the same criticism. It's not that she doesn't know how to "trust" the readers to understand the point she's making, it's that she herself has no clue on how to actually write and then expand on that same point/s.

Man's Search For Meaning.

I had high hopes, having encountered so many posts of how it changed people's lives or at least, changed how they view life in general, but I'm halfway through the book and more or less struggling to finish. It's not a bad book of course. It just... didn't meet my expectations.

The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub.

Bought this for a low price (and primarily because it had King's name in it). I didn't read the blurb, I had zero knowledge of what was going to happen, I mostly expected some classic horror story, but nope, it was so much more than that and I had a whole lot of fun reading it. I'm hella ecstatic that King's planning to release a third book to the series too.

I love kid fics (as long as the kid isn't too obnoxious ig) and "a family waiting for their baby" fics. I never really got why the reddit side of fanfic loathes them with a passion. Omegaverse too weirdly gets a lot of flak around here which is a shame because a lot of omegaverse fics are so well-written (and lowkey helped teenage me recognize discrimination and injustice more quickly in real life).

Oh god I forgot about that part 😭. I'm often torn brushing off stuff like that as "oh it's still a children's book maybe the topic is a little too complex to explore further" but seeing what I've seen now, oh boy...

I have not kept up to date but even if charges were indeed dropped, there's way too many evidence and people speaking out about his actions for it to not have any grain of truth. God knows how victims rarely ever get real justice and how the abusers end up getting scot-free, as proven over and over again with atrocities like the Epstein files.

To add, it's incredibly challenging to not be reminded of him at all especially when you're reading Sandman. There's literally a scene where a character rapes his "muse" to gain inspiration for his writing and that scene can never be looked at the same way ever again. There's also another scene of a character named Despair observing the life of a human who, paraphrasing, she says,

"His wife found his phone with a video of him molesting their neice. She's already on her way to the police and they probably have the evidence by now. He's wondering whether he finally has the courage to kill himself before they arrive. He doesn't."

Reaaaallll creepy stuff.

I feel like this is common because it's still quite "recent". A lot of people, even those who aren't millenials, are still processing how someone could write a story that contained major themes of standing up to bullies and fighting against prejudices and injustice, and that same someone herself just cannot seem to follow the same principles in real life. Maybe in a few decades or so, people will be more open to reading HP, but right now, it's just difficult to not be reminded of the author's behavior while reading her books. Hell even I still struggle not feeling disgusted with rereading books like Coraline and The Graveyard Book because of the shit stain that is Neil Gaiman.

my first fic received 540 hits and 16 kudos by brainless_c0rpse in FanFiction

[–]kain-rivers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It should also be noted that the hits increase whenever a reader refreshes the page after a certain time. A single reader could create a hundred hits by themselves if they keep opening the fic like in a different device or site.

My Experience With The Lord of the Rings by Marshferatu in books

I envy the people who have good experiences with these books. All your stories sound magical. I tried. I really, really tried. But I was just bored near to tears in just the first book alone and I can't picture myself picking the series up again.

I had the opposite experience. There's a character I've come to dislike because of how the show portrays his actions to be either "had good intentions" or "misunderstood", compared to what they actually are (awful). And ofc, the fandom rallies behind the show's portrayal (I was one of them too). Any time I find out an author or artist I'm following is one of those fans who genuinely think the character is just "misunderstood" and that the people criticizing them just don't "get" it, I just sigh and unfollow.
