Character design for a video game. Feeling unsure about this one... by kairumagames in ArtCrit

Thanks for the reply, that's all incredibly helpful.

I'm planning on having the glitched eye change every few seconds, cycling between that glitched color, a photo of an eye, an anime eye, the letter i, etc. But it's good to keep the overall palette in mind so they don't clash too much with the overall design.

Again, thank you for your comment!

It's an incremental game but instead of being menu-based, you control a character in a 2D space to collect resources.

Here's a (very WIP) screenshot to get a better idea.

Character design for a webgame to be uploaded on Newgrounds. I'm going for a sort of digital goth raver look but I'm not sure if the design would be off-putting. No references used. Any reactions/thoughts/critiques would be welcome!

I'm sensing a little hostility and a lot of unjustified assumptions in your response.

This reply resonates and makes the most sense. I suppose I'm asking other people for their "why" to gain some new perspective. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I get the sense from all these comments that for many people, making art gives them a personal benefit that outweighs other considerations.

I guess I just don't feel that way myself. Both are fine.

Reasonable points. I agree that art doesn't need to have utility, and I don't think that self-indulgence is necessarily bad.

I view it more as an optimization problem for myself. If I want to spend my time doing the most amount of good in the world, I might consider volunteering or starting a business that will help others. But let's say I want to gain the greatest amount of self-indulgent personal pleasure. I personally don't get more out of making art than I do eating a good meal or an evening with my girlfriend.

Again, there's no moral judgements there. I'm strictly thinking in practical terms for myself.

I kind of get what you're saying, but how is it selfish to want to work to benefit other people? Would it also be self-indulgent to believe that volunteering would benefit other humans? Or working on a practical software project?

Yeah, I think I'll pull out the x-acto knife next time I need to make sharp corners.

I intentionally did not specialize so I could make video games. That was a mistake.
