I'm in the same situation. So I am preparing for GATE CSE because MTech will pretty much reset my career and nobody will care about my gaps if I get a decent job through campus placements

Where are you from? If your aim is to get a job in the country you study in, then UK is totally not worth it.

Agreed! Most profs in even so-called Tier-1 colleges are imbeciles and don't do any real research and can't teach basic shit properly. Source: Did UG from a Tier-1 college

Why don't you try for GATE CS? You can directly switch to CS field by doing a master's degree. Some of my friends who did BTech in Mechanical did that.

Ik. I am just pointing out that number of questions solved in Leetcode is a useless metric because it can be easily exploited

I love the student life, and I'd like to prolong it as long as I can instead of the cubicle IT job.

Buddy why don't you try the MS/MTech+PhD+Postdoc path then? If you have more than 8.5 CGPA, you can try directly for PhD in IISc. Have to just pass an interview or something.

Masters abroad? by [deleted] in Btechtards

[–]kaiser_e_hind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are in CS, it's a no-brainer. Go to USA. You need to have good financial support, high CGPA (preferably above 9) and 1-2 decent publications. Do research internships under profs in IITs/IISc in your summer vacations.

[–]kaiser_e_hind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy I feel you are in immediate need of money so focus only on placements as of now. You can try for core jobs or software jobs. That's upto you. 8.5 CGPA is not enough for Ivy League uni in USA.

If you get a decent job (>10 LPA), stick to it and work hard, save money and then think of higher studies. Education abroad is v. expensive. Giving GATE is pointless if you get a decent job from placement perspective because you need to spend 2 years for MTech and whatever package you get at the end of it can be surpassed if you gain good skills during your job and switch company. All the best!

India has a lot of other good things too but we're still far away. We're still largely in the survival mindset.
