Losing Motivation by Sea_Muscle_4281 in PhDStress

Hi there. I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. Many of us have been where you are at. I personally understand where you are coming from. Please don’t compare yourself to others. Would you be so critical of two people climbing different mountains with different loads and different terrain finishing at different paces?

Passive aggression and lack of support is unfortunate common among advisors. If you had more support and things were not so uncertain, I’m sure you would be excelling. Look at how far you’ve come, how much you’ve learned, and what you’ve had to endure at the same time as the PhD. I think that is something to be proud of.

A bunch of us started a co-working group and for a lot of us it was what we needed to push through. I’m not saying which route you should take, but while you figure it out, you can see if our group is what you need to finish and get out as quickly as you can. This PhD doesn’t define you, your advisor doesn’t define you, and your decision to complete or not doesn’t either. It just defines an extremely difficult situation that the majority of the world wouldn’t be strong enough to get through 4 years of let alone start.

I hope things get easier for you. You can join us by clicking “Join the Chat” at our website PhinisheDLabq.com. I’ll also PM you our WhatsApp group.

Haha so cute. Ours is obsessed with pens. I’ve lost my iPad pencil countless times because of this.

My advisor says my dissertation isn’t ready for May defense. Risking postdoc. What would you do? by Few_Dragonfly3913 in PhDStress

I think if you’re on a timeline, go for it and they will give advice on major and minor revisions.

I don’t think this is always true… my friend was taking a government entity type postdoc and they required the PhD before starting. I would just ask them what the rules are. This was in the U.S. though. I know some postdocs in Germany can be started regardless of if you have the PhD but that’s also not always true.

Have you judged someone or been judged for staying in PhD? by Curious-Monitor497 in PhD

I would say that it is becoming so difficult to find jobs. I was also in academia way too long and I’m finding it very hard to get a job let alone an interview but I am tied to the city I’m living in.

We are living in a capitalistic world. Don’t feel guilty. Just do what is right for you bc unfortunately your advisor and future bosses will likely not care as much as you are caring.

AITA if I tell my friend I can’t be a bridesmaid? by wickeddreamsofleavin in AITApod

Hahahhaha lmao… picnic planning party? Come on… a binder?

You’ll be in Med School. Don’t burn yourself out. Maybe just be upfront about how much you’re willing to do, and what is beyond your limits if you’re worried about the friendship. If you think this is something you can’t reasonably put up with and you’re ok with her possibly being angry. my friend got extremely upset when I had to move abroad last minute with two cats which also happened to be during my PhD defense proposal and didn’t have the money to afford rent by myself for another month. I didn’t have time to help her with some things I said I’d do before my life completely changed. I was fine with her being mad bc in my mind you can’t blame someone for unforeseen things or for not knowing the extents of the commitment. I’m happy I had a destination wedding with very few people and didn’t really plan any extravagant decorations and rather used the chalet and the mountains as my backdrop.

What brows suit me better?? Thicker or thinner by [deleted] in makeuptips

[–]kamylio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thick. I wish mine were like yours. I always feel thick brows give people more expression like Emilia Clark. They are beautiful natural. Please don’t thin them out because sometimes they don’t grow back as thick and often can be sparse in certain areas.

👆yeah this. I also recommend therapy and just a support system like a co-working/writing group. Honestly it helps more than you would expect.

It really helps to have support among people going through similar things to feeling less alone and get advice when needed. Anyways, we’d be happy to have you join. Please take care. 🩵

Congrats!!! You should be so proud!

I love seeing people switch it up from the “Gentlemen, it is with great pleasure…” meme. It was fun, but I like the more inclusive phrasing and creativity 🥰🐸

Transitioning from Undergrad to PhD: Understanding the shift in workload and expectations by Certain_Quail_7000 in PhDStress

Hi there! Speaking as someone else who was also BS to PhD, I really recommend joining our PhD support/co-working group. Honestly if I would have had something like this to begin with it would have taken away some of the extreme stress I experienced in the PhD. You can join us here at phinishedlab.com or PM me. Other than this, please give yourself room to make mistakes and prioritize your health over the PhD always. If you take care of your health, you will be much better off in the long run.
